What were some of the first few rock bands you saw live and in person. Lets see:

Jethro Tull (Wild Turkey opened) - April 1972 - Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY

Led Zeppelin (No opening act) - May 1972 - Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY

Traffic (Free opened) - January 1973 - Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY

Greatful Dead, Allman Brothers, Band - July 1973 - Watkins Glen, NY

Jethro Tull (Livingston Taylor opened) - August 1973 - Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY

Remember seeing the Beach Boys, T-Rex, Three Dog Night, Who and a few others in either 73 or 74 (memory is shot).

Would have loved to have seen those two gig Stevie and the Duke! Mitch Ryder must have been amazing in his own way.

My first was Bob Dylan and the Hawks in Pasadena and second was The Rolling Stones at Royal Albert Hall

Just remembered also saw the Beatles in 1965 in Las Vegas. Loud beyond belief from all that teen screaming. Had to go to an ear doctor two days later.

My first three :

1. Dire Straits - Whitla Hall, Belfast, 13.12.79

2. 'Summer '80' Festival - Balmoral Showgrounds, Belfast, 28.6.80
(Van Morrison, Lindisfarne, Mike Oldfield, The Chieftains)

3. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - Wembley Arena, London, 29.5.81

I dont know how many concerts I've paid to see since then - probably between 300-400 - but that Bruce show is still to this day the greatest gig I've ever seen.

I did try to see the Stones at MSG in 1972. You had to send in postcards (I think 4 was the max) and if they picked you, you were in. Does anyone else remember this? I think I got this right...

raised on live music so hard to pin what is a concert (late fifties beatnik clubs, groovy man). Spent late sixties going to all of the local battle of the bands, stuff like that.

As for out and out rock shows cut my teeth in 1970 on a tripple bill of John Baldry (Don't lay no boogie woogie), original Fleetwood mac and Savoy Brown, that about sold it for me.

Quickly went on to every thing I could CCR, CSNY, Allman Brothers, mostly 60's 70's rock stuff.

KISS in Providence R.I. 1978. I think the second live show was a J. Geils Band show....

Wow - Don't think too many people can say they saw Hendrix, Cream and the Doors.

I feel lucky, and I saw Hendrix again in the Spring of 1969.

That's one hell of a way to start hearing live music!

Mine -

Nov 1971: T.Rex, no opening act
March 1972: Deep Purple, Silverhead opened
June 1972: David Bowie, Roxy Music opened

Not so bad either!

I also remember being hugely impressed with Curved Air in Oct 1972.

...and to this day I wondered what would have happened if I wasn't caller #13 to KHJ, where I won those tickets to see Hendrix.

My first live music experience was pretty memorable, seeing Muddy Waters (with Johnny Winter on guitar) and Chuck Berry at the Capital Jazz Festival at Alexandra Palace (London) in 1979.

First band I ever saw play live was Sweet d'Buster. probably around 1978/9, IIRC.

July 25, 1966, The Rolling Stones at the Hollywood Bowl.

August 28, 1966, The Beatles at Dodger Stadium.

THe next one I remember was Cream at the LA Forum in October of '68.

Many memorable concerts from that point on.

I will say that when I was 16 or 17, my dad took me to a small club near our house to see the great jazz drummer Louis Bellson and his band, with Doc Severinsen sitting in with then that evening. It was electric!

Yes, Tod, you DO seem to have a knack for pointing out the obvious. Be careful, I'll hit you with my cane or throw my dentures at you.

I wonder if Jim Morrison ever hung out with Jerry Lee when they were on the same bill. Jim was actually good friends with Gene Vincent, apropos of nothing.

You people suck with your excellent first-time-live experiences. My first concert was Krokus. It wasn't my fault, I lived in a backwater, one horse town.
