WTF^%R^% Gary Kasparov arrested outside the court????

they are beating him inside a police van: world chess champion - the pride of the country

Gary Kasparov belongs to the Russian elite as well. Beating him up is a very "welcome" and intimidating stunt on behalf of Poetin's regime.
Kasparov's "worst move" to be there thus far, as he's not a very popular/ insignificant politician in Russia. People want him to play chess.

Bobby Fischer was equal stupid in a way.

Two years. Part of me is surprised and part isn't. When Putin said he hoped the judge would show leniency I suspected it was a ploy and this proves it. Now he can say it's not the result he wanted but the law took its course and there's nothing he can do about it. Which is nonsense of course - if he'd really wanted leniency they'd have got it. Well, it's a big "@#$%& you" to international opinion and no doubt there will be plenty more of it.

They owe people.

Dunno if they have to - but it sure would be adequate.
Sweet Black Angel comes to mind.

Well de gal in danger, de gal in chains, but she keep on pushin', would you do the same?
She countin' up de minutes, she countin' up de days.
She's a sweet black angel,
not a gun toting teacher,
not a Red lovin' school marm;
ain't someone gonna free her,
free de sweet black slave, free de sweet black slave

The Stones were (are) still very popular in Russia.

The attention that celebrities such as Sir Paul or Madonna creates by supporting this Russian punk group contributes to illuminate the political situation in Russia. President Putin may have won this but these kind of victories tend to be Pyrrhic victories in the long run. The sentence is of course a joke (not for the women involved though). In a Western society this may have rendered a fine or, most probably, no conviction at all.

So Paul McCartney is supporting Pussy Riot in a fight for Russian democracy. Meanwhile Sir Paul regularly accepts honours, including the title "Sir", from the head of state of the UK, an unelected position open only to members of a very priveleged family. The upper chamber of the UK's parliament is also unelected; it's members are appointed by the unelected head of state. Instead of accepting those paltry honours, shouldn't Sir Paul be fighting for British democracy by barging into Westminster Abby and staging loud rock concerts while regular people are trying to quietly pray there? That's the kind of illegal thing he supports Pussy Riot doing in Russia.

Those girls will never be forgotten - remember people like Vaclav Havel, who spent time in jail before becoming a president...I know that those girls will be seen as real heroes in the future, and they might become politicians in the future. They wont be forgotten. It's history in the making...

I don't see how this story could be of any interest to anyone except morons whose higer brain function shuts down when they encounter words like "pussy". The best people to decide how justice should be administered in Russia are the Russian authorities, not Red Hot Chili Peppers, Madonna or "Sir" Paul. If Paul McCartney, London resident, wants to be seen as edgy and political, he doesn't need to start pointing his finger at another country as part of some stupid publicity stunt. He should get his dumb ass down to the Ecuadorian embassy and show his support to Julian Assange. That's not likely to happen because he values the paltry honours bestowed on him by British authorities far more than he values helping any human being who is truly in need.

Rubbish.

It's simple - no oil, no Putin. He's no reformer.

As for Pussy Riot ... well, one is attractive, the others ... well, if the ratio for Russian women
from hot to not is 1:3, then that means 2/3 of the men out there will have a date with their left hand.

To call these young women morons - whay the @#$%& with you?
What do you know about living in a country like Russia, sitting in your safe fed politically correct Australia?

Pussy Riot knew exactly what they were doing, just as the Stones did in 1967 and the Pistols did years later. It's nothing more than a publicity stunt and if you upset the powers that be wherever you happen to live then you take the consequences. The band should have known how the Russian authorities would react.

Assange is just another publicity stunt. Does he have a book coming out soon? He does appear to have some questions to answer over allegations of serious crimes. If he is innocent, he should go back home and answer those questions and clear his name. The more he hides in foreign embassies the more the 'no smoke without fire' arguement gains hold. And UK will never invade another embassy over a matter such as this, it's just diplomatic sabre rattling.

It's the silly season journalistcally. Everyone's on vacation, Parliament in recess, football season only just started, Olympics over. Any other time and these two non-stories wouldn't have seen the light of day. A good publicist knows how to time a story.

believe me - it is not a publicity stunt, which is why they got two years in prison (as opposed to the Stones and the Sex Pistols)
and no one thought that the Russian authorities' reaction would be so surreal - there are still laws in Russia and people thought (hoped) that the authorities will respect the laws
by Russian laws they should get an administrative penalties and a fine

I don't think it matters what their motives were. Many civil rights events in the 50's and 60's in America were staged to gain publicity for their cause. I am not comparing the two, just pointing out that people all over the world have knowingly broken laws in order to fight oppressive governments. These girls may have just been after some press for their band, I don't know, but that isn't the point and it shouldn't be what people are focusing on.

proudmary, as an exercise in solidarity, in australia or the usa or europe,
you should set up some amps inside an orthodox synagogue and bark out some
songs about "shitty jews". that's the exact equivalent of what they did.

you'd be charged with a hate crime so fast it would make your head spin.

in indiana some guy is being charged with a hate crime because he brought an
unopened package of bacon to a park where some muslims were having a picnic
and walked around with it.

or how about mimicking this to show your solidarity? the larger collective
pussy riot belongs to has happenings where they go into a supermarket
naked and copulate before families to shock them. "wake them up". try that one
some time in boston or nashville. better yet, have mccartney and madonna do it.
get more press that way.

pussy riot are elitist morons. precisely because they think everybody but them
are morons. not just putin. not just the russian orthodox. EVERYBODY that
doesnt live like they do are cowardly morons. they said so at their trial.

I can't wait for some real gangsta types, calling themselves Big Black Dick,
to set up mikes inside st. patrick's cathedral to rap obscenely about racist catholics,
just for the pleasure of watching you proudmary go to bat for them with such
righteous passion, weeping on a rolling stones board about why oh why did BBD
get tazed and beaten.and i'm SURE the american media would make instant stars
of Big Black Dick just like they have pussy riot because if there's anything
the american media is, its FAIR! Without ANY agenda but the truth!
