The Band was my original favorite band, no comparison in my opinion to the Grateful Dead.

Just out of curiosity, what is it you do not like about the GD? Very good musicians, loved to tour, vast amount of songs (and styles) in their catalog and so on.

I was lucky that I did get to see the Band, Allman Brothers and the GD at Walkins Glen in 1973. Great Summer Jam festival...

Here's a nice one: tempo, tempo, tempo. I'd say those first three albums have held up well, but that isn't really true. Amazingly, every time I revisit them my appreciation continues to grow. It is rich, rich music on every level. I read somewhere that Robbie's (speaking) voice sounds lived-in. That's the way those albums sound to me: honest, true and lived-in. Garth's contribution made The Band's sound truly unique.

I have had a day-dream about the Beatles and Garth. How would the band ever stage Sgt. Pepper? I keep coming up with an image of Garth on stage surrounded by all the electronic equipment he would need. He could be a one-man orchestra and sound effect.
