LOL. Do you even know when to use "it's" and when to use "its"?

Too funny.

Yeah, the spelling mistake was the take away on that one. Good eye Mitch!

I don't wish him dead, but anyone who was a defender of Timothy McVeigh—as Vidal was—is pathetic.

I read that essay, and he wasn't in favor of what McVeigh did (he endorsed Gretta Van Susteran's observation of "two wrongs don't make a right" ), he simply portrayed him has someone who wasn't necessarily a "monster" and who was motivated by what he was motivated by. We're quick to assign the "monster" label without making efforts to actually understand why people do what they do. That being said, I'm glad the bastard got the death penalty.

Yes, similar to Mailer's take on Oswald. Not an apology, but a look into a 'monster's' humanity.
Vidal was one of the last great intellectuals.

At least, unlike Mailer, he didn't get a murderer out of jail so that he could kill again

Yes, that was terrible hubris on Mailer's part. At least he FINALLY acknowledged the ludicrous mistake he had made, albeit much later.

Gore Vidal will be missed!

Vidal was credited for the phrase "No good deed goes unpunished". Vidal and Buckley are two of my hero's. Both superior intellectuals, dry wit and outspoken. Backed up their opinions with facts not feelings. Will be sadly missed.

Yeah, except Oswald didn't actually kill anyone. cool smiley

LOL! Not even Officer Tippit? Let me guess, you think someone else did, right?

It's such a loss because his completely unique perspective on the erosion of the constitution and mechinations of washington power structures is irreplaceable. There is no other Gore Vidal. At least Chomsky is still with us.

Chomsky? Oh, God. As a professor of linguistics, he's first rate. But as a great thinker? Good Lord. It amazes me that some people think of Chomsky and Obama as these great thinkers when they're really charlatans. Chomsky's a college professor for f***'s sake!

Vidal was a very bitter and angry man. He was born to money and felt very guilt about his wealth. He had a lot of failed love affairs with young men.

Good thing there are no bitter and angry men on this blog. I'm sure he worked out the guilt, as long as the money was still there. And what is a failed love affair? All you did was get laid a few fantastic times but you didn't pick out a silver service together? Sounds like Mick Jagger's life.

Well, that's what the left has wanted for a long time, an FDR, JFK, RFK, LBJ, MLK and Moses all rolled into one that could fill stadiums and arenas. Well, they got him.
He reminds me of Mussolini, with that gesture and all.
Anyway, this is digressing.
Back to Vidal.
I had to read him in college.
It was s*** then and it's s*** now.
However, it was well written and a good read, I just didn't buy it.

I know. It's such a Socialist Hell on Earth we're living in because of Comrade Obama. Things are sooooooooo different from the golden era of Bush and Cheney. Barack is such an evil genius that he totally took over the government and now it runs every second of our lives.

That kind of thinking was s##t then, and it's s##t now.

Well, things are a lot worse now than 4 years ago--and I was no fan of Bush.
But, hey, he's your hero, not mine. You guys told us he was gonna change the world.

Not a Obama fan but if Romney becomes the new White House "tenant", the US will be back to what they were between 2000 and 2008 : the laughing stock of the entire planet...

Mitt seems to be as bright as Bush Jr... Quite a reversed achievement!

mitch you really are sounding pathetic and like you live in a trailer park. Got health insurance?

Vidal was brilliant. He save my sanity during Sri Lankan monsoon. I had only a radio in my house hooked up to a car battery. Every day I waited with baited breath for the BBC to start and him to do Letter From America. As was said above, Lincoln is simply sublime. A true thinker willing to ask hard questions that help better define what humanity is. And can be.

Worse than 4 years ago? With the 2008 Banking Crisis? Two wars, Bin Laden alive and well, the real estate market crashed? All Obama had to be in 2008 was not a Republican. And that's all he has to be in 2012. No one is voting for Romney because they actually like that stiff. They're holding their nose and voting against Obama. And no one thinks Obama has been particulary effective in cleaning up the worst mess left a President since Republican Hoover left FDR the Depression in 1933. But you knew that. Because you always learn.

Honestly, is his race that much of a distraction for you?

If you could put forth an idea that didn't focus on his race, I think you would have far more credibility in any observation you might have.

The whole idea of his election was his race.

I wasn't the one distracted.

Really?

So his being the first black President was not a feature of the election?

Really?

He was the new boss same as the old boss (but with a new twist).

And the accusations of racism are nonsense.

I'm looking beyond his colour and I see the same puppet masters (the moneymasters who fund both US political parties).

His colour was a distraction for the voters.

BTW... type "first black american president" into Google news and tell me his colour has nothing to do with his election.

RIP Gore ...

At one time there was a rumour that Mick Jagger was to make a film adaption of Vidal's Kalki....

from a Vanity Fair interview:

Q: What became of Mick Jagger's plan to make a film of Kalki?

GV: Mick took an option. I wrote a script. Hal Ashby signed a "pay or play" contract. Everything was wonderful as of 1982. Then Hal decided to snort all the cocaine in the world. He was never able to make it to a meeting with Mick or me. Finally died. Project too.

Aren't the nuclear agreement with Russia and the health reforms changes - why are republicans complaining so much if the latter isn't a profound change?

There is no question that much of the opposition to Obama is race based. Some people just can't accept having a black man as President. Obama has proven to be to be even more moderate than was Bill Clinton. Obama continued most of the policies put in place by Bush and even his signature achievement -- the signing of the health care act -- was originally designed by conservatives. And yet they speak of him as if he is an extremist. Nothing could be farther from the truth. If he were white, the criticism of him would be much different. In fact, if he were white, Republicans would have a much harder time opposing him since his policies have been similar to theirs.

Doesn't Obama have way less room to maneuver in (make these kind of huge decisions), because of the democrats being in minority in the house, or is it something I don't understand here?
