The shoes from the seventies / early eighties are real dance shoes. I guess he got them inspired from ballet.

With all that movement I can totally understand why he'd wear them onstage. They probably have an amazing grip. They don't exactly look rock n roll but then nor would slipping over onstage as a senior.
