OT Mark Lanegan RIP

Mark Lanegan died this morning, Irish time, he’d been living in Killarney for a while.

This is as big a loss as Stayley, Cobain or Cornell. Mark had an amazing voice. The screaming trees are underrated compared to the other bands of that era. They deserved to be huge. Sweet Oblivion stands up agains any album released at that time. I was lucky to catch him live a few times, and once with Queens of the Stone Age. His memoirs were gritty and given the life he lived its hard believe he died from what appears at this time to be covid related issues.

RIP Mark. Thanks for the music and memories.

RIP.

I agree. Sweet Oblivion is an essential 90’s classic and The Screaming Trees deserve more credit.

Agreed, Chris H., this was a total shocker when the text messages started to roll in around noon today here.

Mark Lanegan's voice was what set him head and shoulders above Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Mark Arm, and Andrew Wood in a very talented group of frontmen during the heydey of Seattle's Grunge scene. It had a smoky, whiskey-soaked gravitas none of the others posessed.

He was also a lot more than a Grunge vocalist. Screaming Trees are rightfully included on the Sons Of Nuggets box set because they started out as a neo-Psych and neo-Garage Rock band during their years recording for the SST label. They had their big moments during the salad days of Grunge around the time of the Singles soundtrack, then Mark went off on his own, exploring some deep music that gravitated between melancholy and euphoria.

Fortunately, I saw him a couple of times performing with Isobel Campbell, and was completely mesmerized. He was a literate and compelling writer who bared his raw feelings about life out on the edge.

A talent gone far too young at 57, he will be sorely missed. RIP.

My favorite Joy Division song.

Saw him performing with Queens Of The Stone Age in Osaka, 2003.

RIP.

I caught him circa 2002 at The London Forum, alongside The Queens of The Stone Age. It was a good gig, and I recollect Dave Grohl was drumming that evening.

Rest in peace, Mark Lanegan

Sad day - his autobiography ‘sing backwards and weep’ is excellent. Think this leaves Eddie last man standing of the grunge frontmen.
I’ve seen a couple of lanegan solo shows (both excellent) in Leeds and Manchester and was looking forward to his upcoming album with hopes of a tour.
Also, his 3x albums with Isobel Campbell were excellent

Eddie Vedder isn’t the only one left. Mark Arm and Mudhoney are still around as is Tad Doyle, who used to front Tad. Then there’s King Buzzo and The Melvins.

1 of the original grunge front men, Mark Arm of Mudhoney, is still very much with us. I am shocked by Mark Lanegan's passing. Great singer & artist.

It's a terrible and frightening read as it gives you a taste of what it's like to be a street-level junkie when you're not a superstar : general misery, bad deals, cops, etc etc.

This is really a sad news.
