1975 vs 1976 Tours

I was just listening to CaptainAcid's "Cherry Oh Baby" 1976 Paris show and was wondering what people think comparing the 2 tours? They both have their own strengths and weaknesses. Hard to say which tour is better. I think the highs of '75 are amazing and the lows are depressing. '76 is more even but less inspiring to me overall.

I love both but of course they are nowhere near the stratospheric heights pf -73 or -72. And thats part of their charm. -75 is different from -76.

I agree that they both have their own strengths and weaknesses, but I somehow tend to prefer the 76 tour. It's as if Ronnie Wood is more integrated in the band's sound. Less solos, more substance. But its just nuances, really love both of them!

Aside from what’s been released officially, I haven’t heard much from these two tours. My impression is that Ronnie was somewhat trying to channel his inner Mick Taylor during the 1975 tour. It makes sense, considering he was only a hired-hand during the U.S. leg and that the audience had, perhaps, become accustomed to the sound and style that had developed during, and because of, Taylor’s time with them.

For some reason I (think) I prefer -76. The setlist but it’s also as if they accepted they’ve changed. I love Ollies contributions. If you cant rock me rocked harder in -75 as did Dice butoverall I prefer the deeper sound of -76. They shouldve dropped Rambler perhaps.

I think the 1975 is far, far better. They were truly at the top of their game, and they couldn't have been more sleazy and down right rock and roll. I find the 1976 tour bloated, and they don't seem to take it seriously at all. Keith was really out of it as well, and the set list was just under par.

They both have their own strengths and weaknesses.

1975 = strength
1976 = weakness?

Imo in 76 Keith's heroin addiction really started to take a heavy toll on him and despite his own self-serving P.R./bullsh!t talk ("responsible junkie" "only used H in maintenance mode") he would have met a terrible fate not long after the 76 tour.
To me the Toronto'77 arrest was a blessing. Hi Mounties and thank you for saving our hero! >grinning smiley< thumbs up

1975 is better!

Re: 1975 vs 1976 Tours

I think '75 was a good bit better. IMO Ron Wood played great. His solos, and the two guitars were stellar.
The weak part of that tour, oddly enough was Jagger. His vocals were one step removed from a dog barking. The other liability at times was Preston. Such a great performer, and key-man, but his synth, especially in the final rave-up numbers grated.
Maybe it was that their dreams were still a little bigger than technology allowed.

I liked both setlists. Was great when the 'Black & Blue' numbers came in in '76.
But it somehow, it always felt to me like the guitar amps were different in 76, than in 75. Did they switch to the Mesa Boogies then? Mathijs would know.

1975 for sure. Rambler in 75 was insanely good. Would really like a vault release from the 76 tour. Not sure why we haven't had anything yet..

1980
1983-88 (1986- 1 show)
1991-93
1996
2000-01
2004
2008-11
2020

Man those 3 shows were something!winking smiley

I agree that Mick overall was the weakest part of the '75 tour. There were, however, some great moments for Mick. The Toronto show was fantastic as were most of the early shows in '75. I think it started falling apart for Mick some time in LA. He just got lazy and slopp

For some reason, Honkey Tonk Women and You Got To Move from LYL sound so much better than any version I've heard from '75. I'm not sure if that's because they played it better, or if it's just the magic of sound mixing and editing.

I'd like an official '76 release to compare the two. '76 has a more interesting setlist. It's a little jarring how different they sound in that two-year period, but I guess that's also its strength.

LOVE YOU LIVE is a pretty good idea, sans overdubs galore, of 1976, since a majority of it comes from 1976. Only 3 tracks are from 1975.

Given that... the band sounded good yet... lost. A bit long.

As in, overdubs overlooked... fantastically lackluster yet still rocking.

That's all I have to go on, other than whatever 1976 videos on YouTube. Set list wise I'd choose 1976 over 1975.

I have never liked the non-El Mocambo cuts on Love You Live. I felt ripped off in '77. Black and Blue had been a mixed bag. IORR was okay, but not inspired. I really thought Love You Live was signaling the end of their relevance. Then came the great Some Girls, followed by the so so Emotional Rescue. I have sense learned to really like Black and Blue. Maybe I should find a copy of Love You Live and see if it sounds any better now.

What's surprising is the dominance of 76 cuts on the lp considering the band was much better in 75.
I mean building the album around the Paris residency which was rather weak while the tapes from L.A. were put to shelf... (apart from Sympathy)

I haven't heard better versions of those tunes on other live albums or bootlegs.

Top stuff!

The first part of the 1975 Tour was surprisingly good, as I was convinced by an earlier post on IORR. But during the later part Jagger's singing was a catastrophy, it was more sort of 'barking' than singing.

The 1976 Tour was more consistent, and they were still a legend. However, the concert at Kiel must have been a complete trainwreck where many people left early, ond on one of the Frankfurt concerts Bill's bass amp broke down.

But if you listen to the (soundwise very mediorce) recording from Stuttgart, 19 June 1976 you will find a very strong version of 'Happy', among others, and 'Fool to cry' or 'You gotta move' were songs that worked excellently in concert. However, the sound had changed, and back then you had to get used to it.

I had IORR on my list at first, but realised it's a 1975-version. It's great anyway thumbs up

For YCAGWYW there are a few 1975-versions I prefer to the LYL version from Paris (although it's very good). This one, for instance: [youtu.be]
