OT: anyone of you seen the 1971 movie `bout a big truck following an innocent man through the desert?

This has been talked of here before, but I`ve just forgotten the title of the film, but what a film it was! Very exciting, very simple and maybe very low budget too? I think the background for the filmed story was some row `bout the wife of the poor victim in the small car. In the end, the poor man rescued himself by jumping out of his own car at full speed before a cliff. It made me ponder if that`s really practically possible...?

it was called "Duel" a Spielberg TV movie from early 70s. Excellent thriller.

Dennis Weaver of McCloud fame starred.

Yes, indeed it was. Put me right off driving through the dessert for many years! Yer just never know when one of those juggernauts is going to sidle out of the bushes behind you.

I wish you hadn't brought this up...

I saw that movie as a kid, and it gave me nightmares for years!
So simple yet so terrifying.

No if you think that "Murder by the book"could be a kind of film, and yes if you just think that it's just an episode of the infamous Columbo serie.winking smiley

It's a great film.

I always wonder whether it's a phantom truck, or just a malicious driver ?

There is a driver on board the truck.

hahaha yup duel with dennis weaver (mcleod)

i remember this flick about some crazy guy in an souped up old transport chasing a dude in a car, when i was about 12; one of speilberg's first better known ones, i think; before that he was directing columbo episodes and stuff; there's even a screw up in the movie when at some point you actually see speilberg in a reflection of some kind at the phone booth, by accident

the truck driver is always hidden somehow though, i think

was originally a low budget tv movie

definite hitchcock influences, suspense creation-wise

Noughtie, you must be very young :-)

I saw the movie when I was a teenager and was very impressed by the idea of a truck with no driver chasing an ordinary citizen in the middle of a desert.
I saw again the movie one yezr ago and of course it seemed odd and old fashioned - almost no dialog etc

I always thought there was no driver in it.

It was one of Speilberg's finest, I thought, and still enjoy it.

You can see the driver at times. Never see his face but at one point the driver waves Weaver on by if I'm not mistaken. So you see an arm waving through the truck window.

(excuse me a sec...ahem...is everybody ready?..)

Back in the 70's, Mick and Dennis Weaver both happened to be in attendance at a party hosted by Hugh Hefner at his Playboy mansion. During the evening, in an uncharacteristic display of anger, Hefner and Weaver got into an argument that escalated into a fight. Mick intervened, calmed the situation, and said "Hey, Hugh! Get off of McCloud!"

(thank you...thank you very much...)
