I doubt Keith Richards played organ on She Smiled Sweetly. If so, he is a lot better organist than anyone knew.

As for Brian playing recorder on All Sold Out, I don't really hear a recorder, do you?

The organ part is simple and easy to play.

There is a recorder on the officially released All Sold Out. It's heard during the section with these lyrics...

All sold out, I'd never seen
A mind so tangled, a girl so strangled
All sold out, well I felt so green
It was just like that, I was put down flat
I was sold out just like that

I played this album to death in my tender youth and love it to bits still. Charlie's drumming is just great. All Sold Out, Yesterday's Papers, Complicated and Connection are my favourites.

I swear I hear voices that don't belong to Mick or Keith on "Yesterday's Papers".

I think they just naturally altered their voices/singing style a bit. Softened them, added a different twang etc.

I must admit this album was so before my time I never have heard the thing through. I guess I have that to look forward to. They all seem like songs dissing the women in their lives so the record sure seems to have a theme to it, no? peace

No.

Never listened to one of the greatest Stones albums? Very unnatural.

RS goes lollipop, the first fundamental mistake of the band followed by the second one, the psychedelic Their Satanic Majesties desaster. I will never hear one of these failed albums again. '67 is a lost year in band history in my opinion.

Stellar output from the Stones in this period. Truly stellar. Can't get enough of it.

I read an interview in which Mick bashed BTB badly. That was back around the 1990's. I was amazed because to me this LP is both excellent in itself and a really exciting example of the Stones branching out musically, lyrically, etc.

Speculation only, but maybe Mick didn't like it previously because he afterwards became a much greater songwriter and producer and thus for a while considered BTB juvenile. I would predict he feels kinder toward it today.

I also definitely recall claims that the Stones, initially very enthusiastic about the record, were disappointed with the mix and what they considered a lack of audio dimensionality of the recording itself, and therefore "officially" dismissed it.

Like I said, I think Between the Buttons is absolutely great.

I prefer listening to the original british mono vinyl. It has more punch compared to the stereo version plus Yesterdays Papers has an extra verse. But all in all not my favorite album.

No. Not unnatural, how many records have you listened to that were made before you were born? The Stones to me started with Let it Bleed and only because those were some of the first sounds I remember ever hearing. When I heard earlier versions of the Stones, they seemed dated and not as good guitar tone centric, so I was off to Hendrix land and Sticky Fingers, et al. And who but you can blame me? From what I gather those records with MT were heads and shoulders above this teeny bopper pop they were putting out in the early years, give me a chance to have a critical listen, I'll be back.

Only now with extra time on my hands have I had the opportunity to revist these records. Not all Stones fans have been around as long as you obviously have kleermaker, give me a break please. After hearing Little Wing how can one get his rocks off on Miss Amanda Jones? peace

But, we are able to hear the varied instruments on the stereo version better.

For example, Brian's electric dulicmer on Cool, Calm and Collected is kinda buried on the UK mono mix.

I always liked Yesterdays Papers.

Cruel lyrics and a nice dirty chord guitar break.

Here's the instrument only track of Let's Spend the Night Together. To me it sounds like two pianos are involved, one the less complex (Keith) and Jack Nitzche the other.

Keith is most likely doing the basic upper register stuff which comes in after the first chrous.

The part mostly consists of the motif played in octaves and basic chordal stabs. Nice and simple, but effective.

Interesting discussion forming (& then ended while I was typing) between HM & Naturalust here... Hope you don't mind if I get in... (Out of respect to HM who doesn't want to continue it here, I won't take it any further on this thread after this edit)

While I agree with Naturalust that the older stuff can sound dated and might not be a technicly well done, it can also be more raw for the same reasons. Sometimes I like my music raw...

Which is why I've got to at least partially agree with HM... I was born in 1969 and WAY WAY WAY up at the top of my favorites list of the 2000+ CDs I own are a Chuck Berry Anthology (three tracks from after 1969), the Fantasia Soundtrack Album (Movie released Nov. 1940 when my Dad was 5 months old), and A Sam Cooke Greatest Hits Album (He died in 1964). A bit farther down the list and you'd find albums by Aretha Franklin, Ike & Tina (some early 70s stuff included), Buddy Holly, Big Joe Turner, Louis Jordan, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, The Beach Boys & The Beatles (the last two with a few traks from after 1969).

Won't deny that newer bands/artists like Walter Wolfman Washington, Keb Mo, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, Mingo Fishtrap, North Mississippi Allstars, Black Crowes are also way up there on the list but it's going to take something really special to knock Chuck, Sam & Fantasia out of the top spots in my heart & ears.

Also, just to Naturalust: My former band played both Little Wing and Miss Amanda Jones and I definately got my rocks off to both... It seemed that much of the crowd and the rest of the band did too! It's one of my favorite Stones tunes and was always fun to have people ask where the song came from. Much much surprise when I told people it was a Stones tune. I don't know if Knoxville isn't that big a Stones town but it seemed we had to tell people that Shine A Light was Stones as well.

Peace,
Mr DJA
