And this is the finest version of it in my opinion..... In fact the only thing wrong with it is its not long enough!

Oops drifting slightly off topic not quite an opening number

Perfect, slippy, slidy, groovy, dirty...

The great live Stones sound.

It's Gimme Shelter... but you can't have too much of it.

Anyone know how "Under My Thumb" was chosen to be the opening number for the'81-'82 tour?

It's a relatively obscure song which always struck me as an odd choice to begin a stadium show with.

It wasn't obscure at all. It had also opened their shows in 1966 and was the song they were playing in the 'Gimme Shelter' movie when Hunter was stabbed.

Wasnt really seen as an odd choice in the slightest - then again, back then they probably reckoned that most of the people who came to their shows had a grasp of their back catalogue which extended beyond their latest greatest hits compilation.

Contrary to the Got LIVE tracklisting, the Stones didn't open with "Under My Thumb" until 1981.
Standard concert openers for the Jones-era:

1.) "Not Fade Away" or "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" (1964)
2.) "Not Fade Away" or "She Said Yeah" (1965)
3.) "Not Fade Away or "The Last Time" (1966)
4.) "The Last Time" (1967)

Great openings:

(Theme Music): 'Awake the trumpet's lofty sound' by Haendel/Let it rock (Anaheim 1978)
(Theme Music): 'The Stripper'/Under my thumb (1981/82)
(Theme Music): Continental drift [instrumental]/Start me up (1989/90)

'Dream opening':
(Theme Music): ? /Dandelion

Your suggestions for the theme music?

The Stripper?

In retrospect, it's quite surprising how similar the 1966 and 1981 versions were.

A very good choice as an opener, imo.

Great openings:
(Theme Music): 'The Stripper'/Under my thumb (1981/82)

Rod Stewart opened his shows with The Stripper in those years.
Stones opened with "Take the A Train".

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Yes, you are right! Sorry for that, it was an error. Here is the correct version:

(Theme Music): 'Awake the trumpet's lofty sound' by Haendel/Let it rock (Anaheim 1978)
(Theme Music): 'Take the A Train'/Under my thumb (1981/82)
(Theme Music): Continental drift [instrumental]/Start me up (1989/90)

I like GLIYWI as an album, I know it's a hybrid live+studio production but there's just something about it... the muddy guitars, the vibe, Mick and Keith's harmonies on The Last Time etc
