Played in a club show with guitars on fire - would be fantastic. Doubt they could do it now with Keith's condition... yawning smiley(

That's a classic Taylor/Richards guitar mash-up. No way could they do it with Wood - nor should they try.
But would be fantastic, all of them, agree?

I don't know if there will be a new album of unreleased material.
In any case, i would like these songs were not forgotten in the archives:

1. Not the way to go
2. Dancing Girl
3. Separately
4. It's all wrong
5. Fast Talking Slow Walking
6. I need you
7. Misty Roads
8. Fiji Jim
9. She never listen to me
10. Chainsaw Rocker
11. What gives you the right?
12. You got it made
13. Lonely at the top
14. Living in the heart of love
15. Save Me
16. Randy Whore
17. Gangster Moll
18. Jah is not dead
19. Guess i should know
20. It's cold down there
21. High or Low
22. Smooth 180

You mean they should be released as they are?

There are two good reason why many of them are unreleased. One - they're unfinished, and two - they're substandard.

I find half of these songs better and more interesting than anything they have released officially.

Mathijs

'Anything' ?

Better and more interesting than, say, Gimme Shelter, Midnight Rambler, Moonlight Mile etc. ? And several other bonafide classics?

Which 'half of these songs' fit into those categories?

Well..What I meant was that I find most of the material from the '77 to '79 Pathe sessions more interesting than Some Girls and Emotional Resque. That's what I mean. And I listen to these outtakes more often than to, say, Let it Bleed or Sticky Fingers. Judging on the outtakes of Dirty Work it could have been a really good album, but they choose the absolute wrong tracks to release, and killed them even further during mixing.

I agree 100% with You Mathijs!!!

But I'd go further and say that the Pathé Marconi sessions are (sometimes) far more interesting that The Stones official output duing the whole of their career, especially the 67-69 period.

Bit of a difference from saying theyre 'better'.

Agree that theyre interesting (like you, '77-79' is a period that fascinates me and my favourite Stones 'sound' even if I think ER is a so-so album), but any liking for the outtakes come from a different perspective than just listening to them for pure musical enjoyment. The 'forbidden fruit' side of the argument in that we're listening to something we're not supposed to be doesnt really make them better songs, though IMO. Plus theres also the uncertainty of what might have been. I'd love to believe that they could have turned 'Its A Lie' for example into a masterpiece - but it could just as easily have been a throwaway had they finished it.

Spot on about DW, but aside from being destroyed at the mixing stage, theres no way CBS would have released a Stones album which had Keith Richards singing on half of the songs.

Although Mick's solo version of Lonely At The Top is better (barely) that Stones one is horrible.

Hi Honestman,
in Chuck Leavell's book:"Between a Rock and a Home Place" he mentions a song Keith recorded during the Licks sessions called "Smooth 180." Chuck said it was a fun track and that he hopes it will be released one day.

Ok thanks, by the way I'm amazed that no one has mentionned the awesome 6'30"version of Some Girls which is far better IMO than the official one...

Hi JFJ,
this song is No. 13 of the list!

Re: 'Fiji Jim', 'I need you', 'Misty Roads' and others

I think they, er, Mick, really missed the boat with what could have gone on the Some Girls extras disc with Not The Way To Go, Fiji Jin, Misty Roads, I Need You and Rotten Roll/Munich Hilton, aside from whatever else there is that's better than a majority of what did get put on that disc.

It makes the Exile disc seem possibly better, since there is less.

If the SG extras disc only had So Young, Spare Parts, Think I Care, Tallahassee, You Win Again and We Had It All it would have been BETTER than the Exile extra disc!

If had the above above mentioned songs, sheeeeeeeooooootttttt, it would have been the next best LP since Tattoo You....

not the way to go.... great tune! what a bass line by bill - almost a reggae feel with the bass line under Keith's great gtr.

Not much to it really. But I would add a few castaway tunes from the B&B sessions too: I Love Ladies, Come On Sugar and I Got A Letter (Keith vox). Would be nice to hear a full version of English Rose (Scarlet perhaps???) as well.

Personally, I'd have loved a disc featuring the 'long' versions of the 'Some Girls' songs (plus 'Everything is turning to gold') before they were edited down for the LP format.

The full length versions of the first four songs alone clock in at about 36 minutes. The unedited version of the title track, which Honestman mentions above, absolutely smokes.

Chuck wrote a positive comment on "Smooth 180" in his book. "High or Low" was reworked with Sheril Crow on vocals so it shouldn't be so bad!
BTW you can remove those songs from the list
