Tomorrow marks the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's fateful voyage. Is there any others out there who have a fascination for that great ship.

It's always held my interest. The story of a "perfect ship" built for wealthy Victorians by visionary industrialists, and then something went wrong and all those people perished together...

I do appreciate the way the 100th anniversary has been covered in the press. I think it's important to remember the limitations of technology, craft, and training regardless of the era, because something can always go wrong. There are a lot of guys I serve with that place too much faith in our technological superiority and training, and they foolishly forget about the terrain -- nature's elements that can easily overcome our man-made hubris.

I don't enjoy the way that the "Titanic industry" goes about turning a horrible tragedy into an ongoing commercial freakshow. For the record, I've never seen the film and don't intend to.

On the other hand, every day on my way to work I pass a commemorative plaque to a chap who ended his days as the owner of a Richmond boatyard: follow the link and you'll find the man who during his adventurous life went to sea under sail, was shipwrecked more than once, stranded on a desert island, caused an invasion scare in Sydney, went prospecting in the Klondyke, worked as a cowboy in Alberta, rode the rails as a hobo in the USA, commanded a destroyer in World War I, took his own motor cruiser to Dunkirk at the age of 65 and rescued 130 soldiers during World War II, and who, just incidentally, was once second officer of the Titanic.

If they build another ship, Titanic II, maybe the Stones could be the orchestra? But this time arrive!

Firstly the voyage began on April 10th not 14th.

I live near Southampton and hate the way the bones of the 1500 people who died are being picked for a buck. Although there was a memorial sevice on the dock side last week its all about a new museum that has to be filled because it's left the council with a £5 million hole to fill. Belfast have spent even more. They should have put a water tank in both museums, lowered the water to near freezing temperatures, lights out and dump some of these Titanic fans in their till they nearly drown or die of hypothermia. Then they might find what happened in 1912 a little less appealing.

Are you talking about the 1997 film, which isn't really so much about the Titanic as it is about a love story between Leonardo and what's-her-name ?

This film, I think, is considered to be the best depiction of the events: [www.imdb.com]

Back when I was a kid, and I went off to camp every year, we all sang together in the mess hall(lunch/dinner room) after lunch, and I remember my favorite song was called about Titanic. I was way too young to even understand that is was a true story... I just enjoyed the revelry and the loud singing... it was fun... and taught us history without know it.

The main lyircs.....
It was sad, so sad.
It was sad, so sad.
It was sad when the great ship went down (to the bottom of the....)
Husbands and wives, little children lost their lives.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

The whole song....

Titanic

Oh, they built the ship Titanic, to sail the ocean blue.
For they thought it was a ship that water would never go through.
It was on its maiden trip, that an iceberg hit the ship.
It was sad when the great ship went down.
Chorus:
It was sad, so sad.
It was sad, so sad.
It was sad when the great ship went down (to the bottom of the....)
Husband and wives, little children lost their lives.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

They were not far from the shore, 'bout a thousand miles or more,
When the rich refused to associate with the poor.
So they threw them down below, where they were the first to go.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

Repeat chorus

Oh, the heroes saved the weak, as the ship began to leak.
And the band on deck played on.
With, "Nearer my God to Thee", they were swept into the sea.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

Repeat chorus

Oh they built a sister ship, Called the S.S. Kunatah
And they knew it was a ship that would never get very far.
So, they christened it with GOP,
And it sunk with a Ker-Plop!
It was glad when the sad ship went down.

Repeat chorus

Additional Verses

They threw the lifeboats over, in the dark and stormy sea.
And the band began to play "Oh Give Thy Soul To Thee."
Little children wept and cried as they left their mother's side.

Repeat chorus

Oh the moral of this story, the moral of this song,
Is that one shouldn't go where he does not belong.
For in the good Lord's eyes, you're as good as other guys,
It was sad when the great ship when down.

Repeat chorus

Oh the moral of this story, is plain as you can see.
Never trust a sailor on the high sea.
He'll call you honey-darling, and say that he'll be true,
But when the ship goes down he'll say the hell/heck with you.

Repeat chorus

After last chorus, there is an extra "so sad, too bad" spoken-sung, and this:

Kerplunk
It sunk
Hunk a junk
In the sea
without me
Luckily
Hee hee hee

and now there is youtube... and of course...
(btw- I dont recall it as a country song, I thought it was a rocker...of course winking smiley

Plenty of other renditions here [www.youtube.com].
saddly most are hillbilly/country versions....
somebody needs to ROCK-A-FY this song..... VanHalenize it

The rich and the poor are buried beside each other in Nova Scotia.

No one alive today knew anyone who died on the Titanic. When a tragedy no longer exists within living memory, it's not a tragedy anymore. It's history.

I totall agree. The sugar coated media overkill at the moment is very annoying to me.

Yes, i'm also a big Titanic buff.

For those of you that do twitter, the history channel has been tweeting the entire voyage in real time. Tweets from first class passengers, the captain etc. It's pretty cool. It will be interesting tonight for sure.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

Great graphics, MKC! The man responsible for this massdeath was, of course, the captain who chose to underestimate the dangers.
Overall deficient British seamanship also: The lifeboats should have been filled to maximum.

I believe that he really thought sinking was not possible. I suppose that one of the problems with believing your own press, "UNSINKABLE"? Why would they (anyone) ever ever ever say that? Talk about tempting fate. THE MORAL.... dont tempt fate.

I think the most interesting number in the graphic is the CREW numbers.

Yeah, it really IS. So many people think that everyone died in that disaster, but far from it. If ever there was a time to take the phrase "hit the ground running" literally though, this would've been it.

Nearer My God To Thee, the reported last song played on Titanic. And filled with the saddest scenes. Especially the poor mother talking her children to sleep knowing they are all about to die. Just heartbreaking.

The mother with the babies is heartbreaking. however it is said that the band did not actually play that song. It was thought it would create more of a panic amongst the remaining passengers. Some survivors said they played a song called "August". Not sure why.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.
