VINYL DEATH MATCH ®: Exile On Main Street vs....itself (the inner struggle)
Posted by: treaclefingers ()

OK, anyone thinking LIB vs. Sticky was heresy is going to experience extreme nausea on this one.

Album one verses Album two. Yes, we're dialling this back to vinyl. Completely unfair to try and match this heavyweight against anything but itself.

So...which is the better slab of vinyl? album 1, or album 2?

The matchups.....

Rocks Off vs. Happy - love ya Keith, and it makes me unhappy to say this, but Rocks Off without any regret. 1-0

Rip This Joint vs. Turd On The Run - I'm feeling some inner turmoil on this one. It's a crappy decision, but Turd. 1-1

Shake Your Hips vs. Ventilator Blues - ahhhh! This one is agony. I can't breathe! OK, Ventilator resuscitates me. 1-2 record 2 takes the lead.

Casino Boogie vs. I Just Want to See His Face - love the ethereal quality to IJWSHF, but then there`s the random word play of boogie. I guess I really don`t care if I see his face all that much. Boogie, and we`re all tied up.

OK, last song on the respective side 1`s...who will win the first half before we flip the records???

Tumbling Dice vs. Let It Loose - great vocal by MJ on LIL. Great complete overall performance by the band on a completely iconic song that almost defines the early 70s. Dice by a landslide...you got to roll me! 3-2

OK, on to side 2

Sweet Virginia vs. All Down The Line - oh man. this is impossible. i'm sweating profusely right now. how do you choose between your children. easily the tightest matchup we've ever had on any Death Match. Damn! OK, I'm pulling myself together here....Sweet Virginia. Holy moly, I can't believe I said that. Can I take it back? No? Too late?! OK, 4-2. I'm crying right now.

Torn & Frayed vs. Stop Breaking Down - LOVE both songs, but Stop Breaking Down for sure if just for the Robert Johnson homage...whew, feel a bit better now. 4-3

Sweet Black Angel vs. Shine a light - sort of a gospel battle, and I know we're not allowed to talk religion here so let's get this over with quickly. Shine A Light easily, much as I love SBA. 4-4....I have a smile on my face, and a tear right in my eye.

OK, we're all tied up...the final showdown...

Loving Cup vs. Soul Survivor - The fact that Soul Survivor clearly rips off It Must Be Hell is evidence to me that it can't be taken seriously. Plus, I'm a man from the mountain. GIMME LITTLE DRINK! 5-4 album one!

That was an emotional experience...I think I need to recover with a second cup of coffee.

Thank you fine sir. I am experiencing a bit of editor's remorse for that decision, so some validation is graciously accepted.

Now I know how Rene feels.

Actually, thinking about it again, it`s more like I now know how Mick feels.

I mean, you`ve got the Rolling Stones. You already have them. THEN, someone out of Boston comes along and says hey, we can do that and we`ll call ourselves Aerosmith.

I mean, there`s nothing wrong with that, it`s a great alternative.

But Aerosmith is not the Rolling Stones.

it is a close matchup, as are several among these two discs..

like Rip This Joint/Turd On The Run..

...they both have similar movements..

Rocks Off vs. Happy - RO because of the spooky middle part. 1-0

Rip This Joint vs. Turd On The Run - RTJ with honorable mention to Turd bass. 2-0

Shake Your Hips vs. Ventilator Blues - SYH. Because I was living in mom's basement when EOMS was released. I liked to rip a joint and watch her coffee pot whenever SYH came on the turntable. It was like the coffee pot was some kind of bazaar exotic dancer shaking its hips with one arm in the air and the other on its hip.
3-0

Casino Boogie vs. I Just Want to See His Face - CB because I was still under the SYH effect. Especially during the intro. 4-0

Tumbling Dice vs. Let It Loose - LIL another one good to rip a joint to in mom's basement. 4-1

Sweet Virginia vs. All Down The Line - ADTL for no damn good reason 4-2

Torn & Frayed vs. Stop Breaking Down - SBD because it's easy to play slide to. 4-3

Sweet Black Angel vs. Shine a light - SAL because it's agood good one to rip a joint to. Very spooky in that regard. 4-4

Loving Cup vs. Soul Survivor - SS mon-fri, LC sat & sun. SS wins 5 days to 2. 4-5

Final score:
Slab of vinyl 1: 4
Slab of vinyl 2: 5
Winner: Slab of vinyl 2 by a toke and a choke.

wow...you know, I hadn't considered context, so immersing myself in a cloudy haze may have had me come to a different set of conclusions.

rip this joint indeed!

I'm not going to argue whether Exile is the greatest album in history, but I WILL argue it was the best one to get ripped to!

NO way it's that much of a blow out...how does Torn & Frayed beat SBD?! and SBA over Shine a Light?! Come on man!

Those were the easiest calls.

Torn was one of my first favs. SBD is great, but after repeated listens (say, over 1000) it is the first I get - slightly - bored of.

Shine a light is the kitsch version of SBA. I love both, but SBA wins hands down.

Rock & Roll, particularly C Berry / Rolling Stones Rock & Roll, is meant to shake your ass to. We, including me, often find ourselves spending way too much time intellectualizing it.

I think the best Exile On Main Street comment I ever read was in IORR. Paraphrasing, it said, 'Exile On Main Street is an album you should listen to while sitting in a comfortable chair, with a dimly lit lamp illuminating the room, and sipping from a full tumbler of whisky.'

Simple, direct, and to the point. Like the Stones' music.

I'm just so delighted to see there are some people who actually do like Just Wanna See his Face and Shake Your Hips. In my time on iorr.org I've never seen them mentioned before. ..also Ventilator Blues is kind of the same way. Maybe I've seen VB mentioned once...or maybe it was just me who brought it up...
