OT (sort of): What other music do you like that's outside the Stones genre?
Posted by: stonesdan60 ()

Just for fun...What music / artists do you like that are totally different from the Stones?

Being 52 years old it often takes me a while to discover new or more recent artists, but aside from the Stones being my favorite kind of music, I've discovered some artists I really like in vastly different genres that move me in different ways. Some that I love might seem odd choices for a big Stones fan:
Evanescence - moves me in a very unique way, especially when I'm a bit down.
Flyleaf - same thing
Pink - I think she's got balls and soul.
Amy Winehouse - RIP.
These are just a few for starters. Anyone else?

Soul, hip-hop, RnB, pop... I like a variety, really. That's why I'm in love with the shuffle function on my iPod. One minute it could be 99 Problems by Jay-Z, the next, Believe What You Say by Ricky Nelson.

suddenly lotza...

but i'll only post this one video which, like a good many of her videos, actually
somewhat detracts, or at least distracts, from the music. But on the plus side
she was able to take reggae to number 12 on the charts recently with this
song - no small feat - combining her one-girl girl-group thing with an up-to-the-
minute caribbean vibe...

I've been listening to The Shins a lot as of late - some gorgeous sounds...Foster the People's album Torches is also towards the top of my listening pleasures over the past several months, which kind of caught me by surprise because it's more electronic than I typically like...I went through a Grace Potter and the Nocturnals phase a several months back and enjoyed it...I really liked Metric's last and look forward to what they have coming out later this year (though I suspect it could be a big miss for me, as most of what they did prior to Fantasies didn't do much for me)... I WANT to like more of Ryan Adams' catalog, but none of it hits me like "Gold" did...Arcade Fire's Suburban was awesome...Weezer!!...The Arctic Monkeys first two releases were great, pretty much start to finish, but their later stuff has been less memorable...Badfinger...The Jayhawks' Tomorrow the Green Grass is awesome. Similar to Ryan Adams, I try to compare everything else of theirs to it and find myself a bit disappointed...Bowie...an unpopular position around here (and at home), but I like Cold Play - especially their first few...Elvis...Beatles (including solo, except Ringo, maybe, because I'm not very familiar and don't have much interest in being so)...Willie Nelson...I used to listen to a lot more Country than I do now and still slip in and out of it...Simon and Garfunkel...I could go on but I won't.

I guess I can be easy to please.

I listen to a lot of operatic rock such as Nightwish, Therion, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, After Forever, etc.

Also love Loreena McKennitt which could be called Celtic-world music.

And I love, love, love October Project.

In the rock genre, I listen to a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers and early Cure.

I like the Grateful Dead and sometimes enjoy old SF bands like Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger service, Big Brother - nostalgia.

Hey, I like Fela too.

He did an amazing album with Ginger Baker, and another good album with Roy Ayers.

I also like Tony Allen, both solo and with the Good, the Bad, & The Queen.

Easy question. Frank Sinatra. He is at his best when singing on a studio album. When he cuts up and acts silly at a live performance, he is an embarrassment.

Sinatra rules.

I also like the Eagles, most classical music, Carole King, and James Taylor.

I love Frank too! In fact, we were having a debate about the greatest "voice" of our lifetime. I said hands down - Frank.

Here's a little tune I adore...
Frank on the radio in the 40s singing With a Song in My Heart
