This is easily the biggest stereotype about the French, and the most inaccurate ,coming from you , Naturalust :-(
I've had a couple of rude encounters in Paris, but no worse than any other big city. They are busy people and they don't necessarily enjoy yet another American tourist asking them in bad French where the Eiffel Tower is. That said, I got lost a bit coming out of the Bastille metro weighed down by baggage and a lady went out of her way to ask where I wanted to go and point the way. In the other parts of France I have been to people have always been very welcoming and genuine.
