Steven Tyler picks his favorite Rolling Stones songs

1. I'm A King Bee

Slim Harpo wrote this. I'd done it in bands in, like, '64 and '65, but when the Stones did it, it was so much better and different.

2. Brown Sugar

This is probably the best rock & roll song short of anything written by Chuck Berry.

3. Rip This Joint

When I went to my first rehab, at a place called Hazelden, I brought Exile on Main Street on cassette. I remember waking up the first morning there and realizing I hadn't been sober once for the past 12 or 15 years, from LSD to heroin and cocaine and acid. The only way I could get a buzz at that point was to listen to "Rip This Joint."

4. Get Off of My Cloud

It's all about those drum fills. I like songs that have a stop – what I call a wet spot. Little moments like those are what you remember forever.

5. Something Happened to Me Yesterday

Anything Keith sang on always killed me, and this one is so @#$%& cool.

6. Hot Stuff

The song just goes on and on, but it was such a @#$%& great groove, right?

7. Memory Motel

Mick can't sing, but he's one of the best @#$%& singers in rock & roll.

8. The Spider And The Fly

This was the kind of song that inspired me to start writing my own lyrics. When Mick sings, "She was common, flirty, she looked about 30" – that was my kind of lyric. It jumped into my ears.

9. She Said Yeah

When I was younger, in all of the bands I was in, way before Aerosmith, we would open sets with "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" and end with this one. I loved all the reverb and Keith's guitar.

i couldn't care less about Steven Tyler's favourite anything,
but those drum fills in Cloud - yes yes yes
and when i first got ahold of the debut album it was King Bee that i played over and over and over -
couldn't get enough

Although not written by the Jagger / Richards duo I find it to be a little odd that Steven didn't choose "You Gotta Move " as it was covered by Aerosmith on " Honkin On Bobo "

This is the second time Tyler has been in Rolling Stone
mag with a list of Stones faves.... the one before was like 30 odd years ago ....

It's foggy but I remember he claimed he had
something like a 9 or 10-minute acoustic demo of All Down The Line ....

Yeah, the first time was around 1990 and I remember him mentioning My Obesession was what he used to do the dirty deed to. I've still got that issue somewhere.

TYler with the innuendos.. thing about Tyler - he is actually a great musician. Gets obscured by his act
Tyler picked good ones. I think re. the acoustic version of ADTL being 8-9 minutes - most likely thinking about the one we all know.
What stop in "Cloud" is he talking about? And Jagger 'can't sing'? Sounds like Tyler putting a clever saying together "He can't sing but he's the best singe in rock.." ho-hum; sounds like a Bono lyric.

I thought I read once that his favorite was Shine A Light. Maybe that was on the old list.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

tyler is talking about the slight breaks in the song that due to mix seem shorter than they actually are. listen again especially coming out of the first chorus

Ask me today what my favorite 10 Stones songs are, and I'll give you 10 Stones songs.
Ask me tomorrow and I'll give you 10 Stones songs, but they'll most likely be different choices, except for maybe Brown Sugar. That song might make the list both days, but nothing's guarenteed.
Tyler picked some good ones.

Some odd calls there, kinda thinkin' "Something Happened to Me ..."
was some sort of affirmation of the lifestyle Tyler chose for hisself
later ... considering he had the Davy Jones look DOWN in those days
he needed some street cred with the harder rockin' outfits, I guess ...

Yeah, I remember that article from circa 1990 too, where he mentioned My Obsession. I also recall that he referenced a "10-minute long" version of All Down the Line that he acquired that "smoked" the original, but I don't recall that he said it was an acoustic version. I've always wondered if he'd heard a version we never heard, but he's probably referring to a version that has been in wider circulation since 1990.

Palace Revolution:

A lot of people used to say in the early days that Mick can't sing, well, not as many as those who said Dylan can't sing.
So Tyler is just repeating a phrase and adding, as we well know, that he is the best singer in rock 'n roll.
He's asking really, how can these two things go together, and answering, because they do. Yes, he's trying to be clever,
and saying that's how it goes in the world of great rock.

Or something like that.

keef, I appreciate the reply, but there is absolutely no stop there. There is no slight stop; the bass, drums, guitars, momentum - everything plows right on.

Good list. It sounds like it comes from someone who actually listens. Not all greatest hits, not all obscure stuff either. Its the real deal.
