Don Covay started out in early 50's singing gospel then worked
for some time with the Washington based Rainbows vocal group ....
By 1956-57 he was performing solo in full on Little Richard style ....

Little Richard was so impressed after seeing him open one of his shows that
he took him into the recording studio...gave him the name "Pretty Boy"
and produced Bip Bop Bip/Paper Dollar with full backing from his band The Upsetters....

Covay had a number of small hits through early 60's .... Pony Time
was covered by Chubby Checker .... Mid 60's he hit his stride as a song-writer
with the guitar driven soul classic Mercy Mercy ...... Chain Of Fools
has been covered by countless acts ....See Saw ....Sookie Sookie ......

The Little Richard connection came full circle in mid 60's when he recorded
the Covay penned I Don't Know What You Got ( But It's Got Me ) with Covay
supplying backing vocals and Jimi Hendrix on guitar .......

Stones covered Mercy Mercy .... Covay worked on Dirty Work .... Ronnie covers
Chain Of Fools on Back To The Streets ( Worth the price of admission alone ).....Don Covay co-wrote Lights Out with
Peter Wolf ....... Stones also supplied a private veiwing-box for a Covay who was ill at the time for show on one of the US tours ... Can't remember if it was 1989 or 94 tour?????.....

GREAT POST AND INFORMATIVE!!

what is fascinating is how songs evolve, The credit remain with the originators - Sometimes the original version is better. up to the listener - but the heart leans to all originators.

Thanks for the clip Chris, and thanks for all the great info Rockman!
Great stuff.

Am amazed by Mick's vocals on this, hits that falsetto like he's 25.

Granted the audio is probably from a cell phone but this version sounds terrible. It badly needs some practice. It's really too bad because I love the 69 version and Keith with the Flying V. This version sounds like a bunch of musicians playing a different version from each other instead of one cohesive song.

Hyde Park version is far scrappier. Partly why that concert is so endearing.

Good falsetto on Jagger.
It's funny to watch Keith: he spends the first verse figuring out the chords again; the second then putting them into Keithian timing; then comes that damn bridge that throws him back a bit, by the 3rd verse he's fully invested LOL
