Under My Thumb - the song with the most different feel between MT and RW

1969 : Listen to that loose grove, so sexy

1981 : Song becomes a commodity to open the show, changes also because of new axis Richards - Wood

Both versions stink. The song is all about the Brian/Bill/Charlie swishy rhythm section. It's very jazzy. They should try it on stage in an almost unplugged version with Ronnie on vibraphone, and somebody who can handle it on standup bass, and Charlie with brushes.

I love the 1981 version. The more rocking—than the studio version—feel took a little getting used to, but then I fell in a love with it after a few listens. So much that when they played the song on their last tour—and I loved them on their last tour—I was a little disappointed they'd returned to the original feel. I wanted them to rock it again!

No - Taylor-ed 1969 version (sorry for the pun) brings it to a whole new level - Jones version is OK, but still a little bit of pop song, to my taste

So everybody has at least one version of Under my thumb to love.
I have at least three of 'em.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

I'm listening to the '81 Hampton version & I love it...it's different but it rocks!

It sort of went back to the original live arrangement in 97, this time with a fake marimba riff from Chuck.

The 69 version is my favorite, including the shows where they used it as a medley into I'm Free. At Hyde Park, they also used a similar arrangement for Mercy Mercy. I think 69 blows the 81 version away as far as atmosphere goes, but I prefer 69 and 81 live to the original studio version, which has too much marimba. Which is a shame, because the fuzz guitar is completely lost in the mix, and should be the driving force of the song.

my band covered that song the other week.
fast & rocky, we liked it,
we played it in the key of E-minor, (suits my voice best ....

We have a set of of 3 stonesosongs: UMT, Satisfaction and Lets spend the night together,

rock on,

the '85 tour versions were the best...how they pulled off that under-medley with under the boardwalk and the under-assistant west coast promo man is still a marvel....

The altamont version may sound "sloppy" or tired sometimes, but when you´re really in the mood to hear some music, you will realize that this languid and heartfelt rendition is one of their greatest performances

imho, this is their song with the most different feel between the studio and the live version; this accentuates the differences, because there´s more creative range to "rebuild" the song, and Mick Taylor and Ron Wood do it in their own style, and in different times.

Hell yeah. I burnt the '85 MSG boot to a CD and listen to it everyday as I go to my work as a parking meter man.

I also like the '66, '69, and '81 versions. Plus the one they called 'Gimme Shelter'.

...AND this, much later, one:

I dig 1969 and 1981 but prefer 1981 because it's faster and better played musicianship wise. 1969 is heavy, which is cool. That 1997 and from the Bang tour sucks.

I like all three - they are different that is what is so cool about the Stones songs are invented and re-invented. Do I have a preference yes I'll say the studio one is the best but I like all three.

i would argue this version is the Stones finest moment on stage! Amazing rendition of the song under incredible stress just after the murder !

Less to do with band line up and more to do with music in the late 60's and early 80's.
So many song sounded slow and "druggy" at Altamont and likewise many in '81 were way faster then they should have been.

Love both though!
