I think I caught one of those shows you're talking about.
He was helped onto the stage and never moved a step the entire show.
I thought he played OK then, but I couldn't help but worry about the man.
my understanding is that he's still getting some help to his seat (used to be they actually carried him)...but the main thing is the lack of pain meds have restored his playing abilities to something approximating the johnny winter we all remember
I was also at one of the shows of that period in the mid 2000's.At the opening of the show, it took Johnny 3 minutes to walk to his microphone stand(center stage). He looked very frail which completely shocked me and worried me. He played well and because Johnny is so @#$%& great than even sick he is better than most healthy players. At one point he sat down, got rid off that weird guitar that he seems to like very much and he strapped a Firebird, put a bottleneck on one of his lefthand fingers and the magic was back. I hope he is doing better nowadays, I missed him last week in Annapolis,Md. Good show Edith.

haven't seen him in awhile myself...but reports are that he's doing much better than he was a few years back when he was on serious pain meds for hip replacements that went awry....he certainly played much better on his latest record than he did on previous one...

He is doing fine and what a rippin real deal he is. He's old and frail, so what? He can grab your soul and turn it inside out! I'd say it's a must see for guitar players in this world. Go Johnny Go! peace

I recently read a long and interesting interview with Winter about his health issues and how he is under new management and feeling much better. The article also mentions how his previous manager pretty much ripped him off and encouraged him to stay on methadone, which gave the manager more control over Johnny. So it seems he has come out of his haze and doing much better. I would go see him in a second!

nothing like the old daze, though. don't go expecting that. not even near what he was like even in the mid-80s...saw him a couple of times then and he was other-worldly....

Yeah I agree tod. I have seen him ten times...and quite a few times in the 80's, and it was sublime. One show was in a small club in Ann Arbor MI and he was a guitar god. Unstoppable, and played some flaming slide. Go, it will be worth it. A living legend.

I was extremely lucky to have moved to Atlanta when I was a kid in 1970. I still remember Johnny Winter striding out to center stage in an electric blue jacket, his long white mane, Rick Derringer at his side, and growling out, "Ya'll ready to hear some blues!" It was incredible.
