What's the deal about version IV being "unmixed" on certain bootlegs? Surely it has to be mixed somehow, given that it's a multitrack recording...

Do you mean version 4? "Unmixed" would mean...it's not mixed ie it's a rough mix for homework. Playback. Or possibly some things were not in the mix.

The previous Weissbuch mentioned Version IV dialogue end mono mix. I know it exists but don't see it listed in this new edition.

There is another not yet discussed version without saxophone-overdubs and completely different lead licks by mick taylor (they sound like overdubs). i have it on some bootleg but don´t know the name right now ... pretty nice one!

Sure. It should say:

- Brown Sugar 5 (MJ/KR) -STU on piano, with Bobby Keys on sax, MT hardly
audible

Not sure why the Roman Numeral crap is necessary.

LOL, it's something for higher educated people only. Sorry that you can't read it...tongue sticking out smiley

At least he can read standard numbers, but please don't ask him to substract or multiply...

Brown Sugar as found on A Shot Of Salvation and disc four of the Black Box - Special Millenium edition are very similiar but the mix appears to be slightly different as the percussion during the guitarsolo (castanets?) is much more audible on A Shot Of Salvation.

Same goes for 'version IV' as found on the Black Box - Millenium editon (disc 3) and Time Trip 2. Both are very similar to the Sticky Fingers version but they are lacking the echo effect in the intro. The percussion during the guitarsolo is more audible on the Black Box. And, as the Weisbuch states, there is also the mono single mix of Brown Sugar.

The version of MJ playing Brown sugar to Ike and Tina in the backstage of MSG on the Nov. 28 should be added to this list as Brown sugar pre-I.

Abkco re-released so much Stones material in so many different compilations The Stones even started puting the disclaimer on their new releases like "This is a new recording, beware of re-packaging" Remember that??

It's been pointed out that the Stones should've done that with their own compilations! They turned into what they railed against.

Dont really get that since other than the 'Hits" pkgs they havent done that...but maybe they were just mad because this was in the 70s and they were still producing an album a year and Abkco was flooding the market with repackaged albums...

Wrong. ABKCO didn't flood the market with compilations. Decca in England did. That's a different manner. Those compilations like Stoneage, Milestones etc. where only released in EU. America (and ABKCO's territory back in the seventies) only released Hot Rocks, More Hot Rocks & Metamorphosis.

If Abkco owned the material then Decca obviously had to have their cooperation to release all those repackages, I assume....

Comparing the April 24, 1970 versions included in Sotheby's Reel and in Time Trip 2, the only difference that I note between version V and VI are the percussions: castanets during the sax solo and maracas at the end of the solo.
Guitar parts sound identical.

It's the same version as always. Maybe the absence of compression is fooling you?
