OT- John Prine

Any fans of John Prine here? I've only recently dug more deeply into his catalog, beyond the few songs I've known for years like Paradise and Angel from Montgomery. Been going through his 70s records for the last week or so, and I'm absolutely stunned that it took me until now to stumble upon his work. Unbelievable songwriter and musician.

I like a John Prine album that most think is his worst, i.e Pink Cadillac. Down By The Side of The Road is brilliant - "Goddamn ! My socks are hard".

Was really into listening to him back in the day. I would give friends a copy of his first album and tell them go listen to some really great songs: Hello In There, Sam Stone, Illegal Smile, etc. I played Hello In There for my grandmother. She listened to all of it and when it was done, said there was some great truth in the song. Yep.

Been a huge fan since the early seventies. Took him another 20 years before he played here (Scotland)), but has returned regularly since then, most recently an outdoor show last month. The material from the new album stood up really well along with the classics. Another Grammy in the post, I reckon.

Caught him live last week in Portland, OR, with the very talented Todd Snyder opening. It was a great evening of music... well worth the price of admission. See him if you can.

Good stuff,if you wanna go a little further down the road after that scroll down to the Townes VanZandt song.
It’s sad that this bro country crap on the radio is making the uninitiated think that’s what country music is,some idiot singing about beer and a pickup truck.smh
At least Chris Stapleton is breaking through now, that boy is the real deal.
Jamie Johnson too.
There’s a reason the Stones listen to this stuff people.

Speaking of Townes Van Zandt, here's a great clip from Heartworn Highways where he plays a moving version of Waitin´ Around to Die:

Being from Chicago, I first saw Prine when he was a young folkie. He gained attention as a good friend of Steve Goodman's.

A good anthology of that scene, with songs by Chicago artists including Prine, and guests such as Bonnie Raitt, Arlo Guthrie, Jethro Burns, Richie Havens, David Bromberg, etc., is the live album of the tribute concert after Goodman's untimely death.

He's kind of the George Carlin of folk music. He injects a lot of humor into his lyrics while making us take a deeper look into our own lives. Brilliant song writer.
