OT - Your Guitar
Posted by: GravityBoy ()
Date: December 16, 2011 00:18

I've owned a lot of guitars over the years, all kinds, from rubbish to great.

Mentioned in dispatches.. Epiphone Casino (cost £500) and Gibson Les Paul Studio (cost £700), they were lovely.

I had an Epiphone Les Paul Custom that was really nice and also a cheap old "Vintage" (The Brand) Les Paul that played just brilliantly.

However... I recently purchased a TV Yellow Gibson Melody Maker with just one P90 pickup for £275 on Ebay.

This guitar is rock heaven, it's just awesome, the best I ever owned, can't stop playing it.

Bog standard basic but I love it.

Light as a feather and sustains forever.

Makes you wonder about guitars that cost thousands of pounds.

I've been through a few expensive Gibsons, Fenders etc, but now, for me, relativley cheap, but well made guitars is where it's at.

I own 2 Squier Classic Vibe guitars, Tele and a Stratocaster. They do what I need them to do and sound fine doing it.

thumbs up

GravityBoy, that's a beauty. Is it new or vintage?

I have an '85 Strat, Lake Placid Blue, an imitation sunburst Les Paul that I bought from some guy off the Internet and a Johnson acoustic. Oh, and a very dodgy old Peavy Backstage amp.

Wow, I just realized how pitiful this situation is. I really need to invest in something high quality.

My friend had a made in US placid blue one, now that was a nice guitar.

You don't need to spend money to get good quality these days, I realised that after years of searching.

The only thing that does make a different is pickups, you get what you pay for normally - although Tonerider are cheap(ish) and cheerful.

I have a a great '58 Les Paul Historic that cost a pretty penny and a CIJ '57 Strat that I obtained for under 300. Both are great guitars but I have to say the cheaper Strat does the job very well indeed...

I have a Fender Stratocaster Classic 70's MIM that I both love and hate. That is my one and only electric guitar today. I used to own two Epiphone Casinos and a Squier Jagmaster but sold them all to finance other instruments.

The Classic Vibe series are amazing guitars! I recently tried a Tele CV at my local dealer and I absolutely loved it. The finish, frets and the setup were perfect. I also liked the neck a lot. Now I only wish I could convince myself that I need another guitar. smiling smiley

Here's me with most of my guitars:

The "Keef" Tele Custom is a Mexican Fender. The white SG is a Historic VOS '61 reissue. The natural Strat is a '78 with a custom Nintendo/Mega Man pickguard. The Hello Kitty Strat is a Squier Affinity. My best guitars overall are my USA-made Hamers.

2 years ago I sold most of my guitars, but still have 5 left - incl. my SWEET DARLING Gibson SG from 1972- my fav. of all time. I bought it in 1973 while I was going to scholl, and I had a job in a guitarshop after scholl and in weekends.
It took me 3 yars to pay it. I,ll NEVER sell it!
Darling nr. 2 is my Gibson 335. The rest is just Fenders (crap IMHO)

cheers hot smiley

Got a black 81 Tele with maple neck a la Keith. My acoustic is a Ibanez Vintage with a beautiful tone which I bought in 81. Also have an Aria Pro II active bass and a mandolin.

P90s are where it's at man.

IBJL Epiphone Casino
Burny 335
Tokai SG
Epi Firebird VII
Fender MIJ Telecaster
Fender U.S. stratocaster
Gibson LP Custom
Fender MIJ Precision Bass

There are so many well made relatively cheap guitars out there these days that there is hardly any reason to buy a high end guitar. Save the money for a good tube amp.

I forgot to mention my white CIJ Fender Mustang Bass which I play in a covers band.

Delicious and as smooth as silk to play - that one is going nowhere, ever.

Like this one.

I have about 9 guitars, but I still prefer to play on my Gibson ES-335 and my Fender Jazzmaster.

I also have an Epiphone doubleneck, but I think I'm going to sell that one. That is freakin' heavy.

My two main guitars are a 50's Reissue Mexican Stratocaster and a Squire Classic Vibe 50's Telecaster. Both are superb.

NICE!!! A new player smiling smiley

Remember, you have to get your fingers and finger tips "in shape" and used to playing. There are a 1000 different methods to learn how to play, I suggest you try them ALL and whichever keeps you playing, do that.... and dont let anyone disudae you.

Dont keep your new baby locked in a box, keep her out, on a stand (you may have to buy on) [www.musiciansfriend.com] and plugged in so you can grab her ALL THE TIME and start playing.... esp if you watch some TV, keep her by the TV.,..pick her up and play her.

Learn how to use "TABS" which show you which string and fret to pluck to play a song..... find your favorite licks and play them.... it is awesome. Learn how to play Happy Birthday... and Jingle Bells and other easy fun songs....

Dont worry about becoming an expert in 2 weeks, you have your whole life to get there... just keep playing... there are many more tips out there.... read em all use the good one, drop the and ones...

Maybe buy a couple of beginner DVDs on how to play..... they can be useful...and you can watch them over and over and over..... beginned guides will show you the basics.......

And last but not least, your guiatar needs to be properly set up... did you buy an electronic tuner? If not, [www.musiciansfriend.com] you should... they are a modern miracle. Did you know that on a properly set up guitar that a note played holding down on the 12th fret of a string is the same note (an octave higher) as a note played on that string open(not holding down on any fret)....if it is not.... then you need to pay$10-30 bucks to have your local guiatar shop set up you guitar.,,, maybe the people you bought it from will do it for free...

KEEP ON KEEPING ON...
