Did anyone mention Tupac? I grudgingly got some of it, I almost never listen to it but a lot of people are like that with me. He and what's the other guy? Infamous or Notorious BiG are famous, Run DMC, don't think I saw them mentioned either but some of the BeastieBoys in a cardio class I take and they are okay in there. I got that Tupac because I did go to DC in a mini-bus with a number of Africans actually and they played Bob Marley, Ethiopian and Tupac so on the bus Tupac did not seem that bad.

I do like Yellowman in reggae, they say in Yellowman lies the roots at least some of what is called "Toasting" in Jamaica which is suppose to be the rough equivalent of rape, toasting is to reggae what rap is to soul. I don't know. But I do enjoy Yellowman and he does sort of speak his songs. But other than this superficial analysis of what I've heard, I only know his music.

I just finished reading a great book that details the origins of the hip hop culture, amongst other music from NYC. highly recommended!

which is suppose to be the rough equivalent of rape\

...well yeah things don't get much rougher than rape .....

But lets not forget that long before Yellowman there was BIG YOUTH...
Who makes 'em all sound like Timberlake alongside Otis Redding ...

And later on up there around the time of Yellowman was
The Lone Ranger....Jose Wales and that slacker himself General Echo....

My wonder is if Hip Hop has done some exciting new turns in recent years...I mean Jay Z must be as established as Bono...I thought Londons hip hop scene had something some years ago...haven't been followed it since...

my personal recommendations to look up on youtube would be:

pharcyde - she keeps passing me by
lyrics born - always fine tuning
lordz of brooklyn - saturday night fever
house of pain - shamrocks and shenanigans
anything from beastie boys ill communication album
funkdoobiest - rock on
run dmc - tougher than leather
jurrasic 5 - who rocks the house
common - i used to love her

if you weren't into hip hop after listening to those tracks... i'd assume hip hop isn't your thing, but i would commend you for sampling it.

The 2Pac segment has had a thread of its own, but here is the Dre & Snoop Dog performance in its entirety. This is utterly fantastic.

I'd like to recommend satirical hip hop troupe Trilambs. Their stuff is just hilarious.

Jay Z's MTV Unplugged from a few years ago, featuring The Roots, is a great disc.

Jay-Z interests me as he seems to like to dip his toes and explore different genres and styles: collaborating will Linkin Park and having an LP produced by Rick Rubin being two examples. I like most of his collaborations, actually - almost more than his solo output.

Forget Rap. It has no merit musically, and will not last. If you want to listen to high quality music, listen to classical jazz, or classical music. For fun and entertainment, listen to Sinatra, the Stones, ZZ Top, or the Eagles.

Rap sucks!!!

While I'm not into this kind of music, I have to confess, my nephew is a good hip-hop artist w/ reggae influences. He plays frequently at the House of Blues (on both costs)..he's released a couple of records...check him out - his name is Colliebuddz.

Cheers! smoking smiley

I'm not a big hip-hop/rap fan at all (which befuddles people "But! Your dad is black?! How can you now like rap?!")

I love some of it though, the Beastie Boys are great, not just rappers, they started out as a punk band and went towards rap, then, after 1990 they brought the instruments back. The song above is a good example.

I like a lot of the old school 80s stuff (Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC), however, even though I am in their demographic (29 year old male), 99% of the new stuff leaves me cold. Not much humor, and I can't really relate to/be drawn in by most of the subject matter.

Eminem is extremely funny, as well as witty. L'il Wayne can be funny too. Geto
boys were hilarious, Mos Def is funny, J5 were funny, Kanye West can be funny,
the list goes on. Any of the intelligent rappers are going to be funny in one
respect or another because they enjoy playing with words and word meanings, and
focking with people's stereotypes of themselves. But it's not everyone's brand
of humor, or music, certainly.

Has to be the Beastie Boys hands down, as someone else has already mentioned they started out as a New York Punk/Hardcore band and they still play instruments now. They're more than just a Rap/Hip-Hop group. They've done some amusing and good covers live:

Oasis - Wonder Wall
Billy Joel - Big Shot
Elton John - Benny and the Jets

To name a few.

They've also played and toured as a BAND under aliases: Quazar and Trip Hammer.
Mike D is a very solid drummer, not as good as Charlie of course but still good.
Their 1999 compilation album Sounds of Science is a good place to start.

Rap sucks!!!

Its lasted for over 30 years!! And to say it has no merit musically, you must not have listened to much rap.

Common, Mos Def, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul are all very musical.

Mos Def has done his own versions of Come On and other Chuck Berry songs which are pretty good.

'ZZ Top, The Eagles'? Zzzz... LOl! smoking smiley

Truth be told, I used to criticise the genre of hip-hop - or 'black music' as I used to dub it - and only listen to my fathers 1960's vinyl collection: Beatles, Stones, etc. However, with the passing of time, ones musical-tastes can expand... and mine certainly have. I still like the rock 'n roll - still my passion, actually - but old-school hip-hop is now a definite favourite.

I think part of the dislike amongst some here is down to cultural differences, also. Ive always had black girlfriends, so maybe I have become a little more open to it all. Saying that; my current partner is getting me to copy her my Beatles CD's - so there is hope yet! Ha ha.
