Times are getting so tough in Britain that even the queen is taking a pay cut.

As part of series of austerity measures, the British government plans to freeze funding to Queen Elizabeth II, the U.K.'s Sunday Times reports.

The queen will continue to draw $50 million per year in public money -- about half of what British taxpayers doled out to the royal family before the economy tanked, according to ABC News.

That means throwing fewer royal parties and putting off repairs for the royal palaces.

Prince Charles will have to pick up the tab for Prince William and Kate Middleton's staff, security and global travel -- all of which used to come courtesy of the English taxpayer.

To make extra cash, the queen will rent out rooms in St. James's palace to corporate fatcats during next year's Olympic games.

Some say the queen has become more frugal since the onset of the economic crisis that pushed the U.K.'s conservative governing coalition to slash spending, beginning last year.

"You don’t really realize, but the queen is going around Buckingham Palace, turning off the lights, having fewer staff, even turning the heating down," Editor-in-chief of Royal Magazine Ingrid Seward told ABC News.

But while the 85-year-old monarch may be saving on her energy bill, she continues to splurge in other areas. Her majesty just dropped almost $800,000 on a new horse.

Headline on the front of The Sunday Times last weekend.

"Queen shares pain with pay freeze until 2015".

austerity never really works....people with money know you have to stimulate the economy for real growth.

Fifty million? Are you f-ing kidding me? I had no ideas those a-holes got that much money.

I wish somebody would pay me $50 for waving, but I'd sure take $50 million.

Wow, the monarchy has declined. The first Queen Elizabeth would never have stood for a pay cut.

We used have to pay too here in America, then we were blessed with people like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Nathanael Greene, Henry Knox, Alexander Hamilton, Ethan Allen, Joseph Plumb Martin to name a few.

Every country has a head of State. Monarchy or Presidential.

I'd rather cut my left bollock of than have Present Cameron.....

Take them to the public square and cut all their heads off. For an annual savings of 50 million, it's worth it.

If you wanna have a pop at a complete waste of money try the NHS reforms nobody voted for (3 billion and counting), bombing Libya into the dark ages (nothing to do with us), or the Opening Ceremony for the Olympics (doubled in cost already to over 60 million)....

Their are lot worse evils in the world then the Royal family. Look at all the attention given to the last Royal wedding. Lighten the F up people. Go through every Governments budget in the world. You'll find a lot more than 50 Mill in waste.
