"Sleep Tonight": Did Keith think it was in C?

So I was messing around with this track the other day, and I noticed that Keith's guitar fills are his stock C major pentatonic stuff in the fifth position and the 12th position — this despite the song being in the key of F. I thought, hmmm, that's interesting. It's not "wrong" per se to play C licks over F — you could say it's a Lydian sound! — but it's not a move you'd typically expect from Keith.

And then I looked it up on TIOOS Track Talk and read this 1985 quote from Keith: "The chorus is virtually a doo-wop chorus in C, but then the verses modulate quite naturally into another key. I had to wait for other people to convince me to go ahead with it; for a while I was saying, This is all good fun but we're wasting time, because I'm SURE this is somebody else's song (laughs)."

Go figure.

He just said the wrong key.

He does some similar stuff on Sad Sad Sad (A and C, if memory serves) + on Always Suffering.

It's cool. Adds a jazzy flavour to it, imo.
