Well, since you ask it depends on how you phrase it. 'Exile' either sold well or poorly or sales of 'Exile' were good or poor. in the first case well and poorly are adverbs augmenting the verb sold. In the second case good and poor are adjectives augmenting the noun sales. As to the relevance of Billboard I couldn't care less. What matters is if one likes the record or not.
