Syd Barrett stayed retired after his 70's solo work. Although his mental health was more a factor in that as opposed to some rational decision to do so. I think the last time he did anything was a 1974 studio session that only lasted a few days and didn't produce anything. After that I don't think he did anything music related (except for crashing the "Wish You Were Here" session in '75, though he didn't play) until his death in 2006.

I imagine these guys subsequently made some music in their garage or something, but in terms of leaving the spotlight -- Bill Berry of REM, and Pete Quaife of the Kinks prior to his passing.

Van Morrison has almost retired. No new album in years, only a handful of concerts, no archive releases. !

Thats interesting, because hes playing down the road from me in 2 months and some imposter using his name has been playing some new songs at his recent shows!

Out the blues and into the black
You pay for this and they give you that
Once you're gone, you can't come back
When you're out the blues and into the black

. . .

Better to burn out

than to fade away

On the internet nobody knows
you're Mick Jagger

Lee Michaels, master of the Hammond B3, was big in the 60's and 70's, and recorded about 9 albums. He retired about 30 years ago and has neither toured nor recorded since then. He owned a restaurant called Killer Shrimp for a while, but has stayed retired from the music scene, living in Venice Beach, California.

Van Morrison has almost retired.

eh?

last studio album just three years ago - and then the big astral weeks stuff replete with live album and he still tours and plays gigs here and there. not even close to almost retired.

No, the ASTRAL WEEKS LIVE album is from 2008. Since then he has played a handful of concerts (21 in 2010,5 in 2011, which one possibly following in November). But he has not released anything since 2008, not even archive material.
I am not complainimg but I would not call that very active.

Fats Domino. He became ill during a European Tour in 1995, & vowed that he'd never tour again. He's stuck to his word, only doing a handful of appearances in his home town since then.

I saw Nancy in London only about 6 years ago when she did that album with Jarvis Cocker and other UK songwriters. Even got a kiss from her in the 2nd row! eye popping smiley

Dave Davies from The Kinks pretty much retired after having a stroke although I think he's back to general fitness again.

the live album was released in 2009...and his live schedule hasn't changed much in the last 20 years...so these past couple of years have hardly been noteworthy regarding his "retirement." van's still very much an active performer...i suspect you'll see new studio product in the coming year.

Its still a long way from being 'almost retired'. If thats what Morrison is, what would you call the Stones?

Maybe because he died on December 17, 2010. RIP Don Van Vilet.

Bill Withers

Cocteau Twins in '95

a lot of the page 1 examples don't count (if I understand the original post's intention) because people who retired due to physical/mental health like Syd, Bowie, Collins, etc HAD to retire, ie- involuntary retirement.
