Just throw this out there, does anyone remember/recall when John Lennon said he wished " he was a Rolling Stone and not a Beatle"

Not sure but it would not surprise me if he said it in the same breath when telling McCartney that he was writing 'Granny music!"

Yea true, but it was a fact that he hung out with Jagger quite a bit

I think Lennon wouldn't have minded joining the Stones around 1969 with all the problems with Macca. Only thing holding him back was Yoko!

Thing about Lennon is that he had such an awesome rock voice when he was allowed to let loose (i.e. Rock & Roll Circus in 1968) but he was born to be a leader. Jagger & Lennon couldn't have co-existed in the same band IMO.

Few days ago I found on the internet a Frank Zappa's interview by a french journalist in which Zappa repeatedly mentionned that he prefered the Rolling Stones than The Beatles. I was very surprised but quite happy.
Rock and Roll,

If he actually said it, probably December of 1968 during the filming of rock 'n roll circus would be my guess.

Bingo! I think John already knew that very well.

I find it hard to believe that John said that and meant it. In 69 John wanted to be with Yoko and noone else. If he would have joined the Stones then Yoko would have had to come with him. Can you imagine that! thumbs down

I don't know about John saying that, but I've heard in several different rock docs various talking heads saying that The Stones were the band the Beatles wished they could be, especially in the early days. Not anything about quality of the music or stuff like that, but I think because The Beatles sort of got corralled into the wholesome clean cut image and they wished they could let it all hang out more like the Stones. Though as their career progressed they were pretty well able to be themselves.

John certainly belittle the Stone enough, basically declaring that they were not in the Beatles league, musically. He liked their funkiness but not all that 'fag dancing'. Something tells me protests too much.

I think he probably meant that he wished the Beatles had the same rebellious image. Can't see Lennon in the Stones. He was too big for them.

not sure, but the funniest thing I remember Lennon saying is an answer to question - Is Ringo the world´s greatest drummer ?
and John goes - The best drummer in the world, No, Ringo´s not even the best drummer in the Beatles.

They kinda had before they were "suited up" and turned into money-making puppets.

too bad we don't have a rockn'roll organization and commissioner and stuff...and trades could be negotiated...even three-way trades...you'd have to have a trade deadline, of course...and draft-day deadlines and whatnot...but still

We do have the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, so it seems as though we're part of the way there.

yeah, but HOF's suck. i'm talking about some serious re-engineering of the whole way bands are formed, re-formed, de-formed, certified, de-certified and so forth. i really think someone needs to take charge here and move this forward...

i don't think he meant that. Ringo's drumming in The Beatles was fantastic, he was certainly better and more interesting than Paul. Keep in mind, Lennon was a major ass-hole.

No he didn't. But I believe he would have loved to have had John in the new band he tried to get together in 69.

No kidding. I was thinking the same thing. At best they seem like a Beatles tribute act.
