So, how is it they get to release this now, but couldn't back then for "legal reasons" what a great song... While we wait, enjoy Claudine singing "Let's spend The Night Together"

Yes, terrific song. Shame they couldn't release it at the time. Would have been great on Emotional Rescue. Really like the 7 1/2 minute version where Mick says "Keith, will you put that weapon down".

Pete.

Maybe the people in question no longer give a damn about it 35 years on?

Well, if Claudine Longet is dead that would answer that one. Not sure if she's still alive.

She's very much alive.

Maybe she's been given a sweetener to turn a blind eye.

It might simply be that releasing the song when the story was still current was litigious, now it's a matter of public record.

from wikipedia :

Longet was arrested and charged with fatally shooting her boyfriend, Olympic skier Vladimir "Spider" Sabich, at his Aspen, Colorado, home on 21 March 1976. At trial, Longet said the gun discharged accidentally as Sabich was showing her how it worked. (Andy) Williams publicly supported Longet throughout the trial, even escorting her to and from the courthouse.

The Aspen police made two procedural errors that aided Longet's defense: Without warrants, they took a blood sample from her and confiscated her diary. According to prosecutors, the sample showed the presence of cocaine in her blood, and her diary reportedly contradicted her claim that her relationship with Sabich had not soured. In addition, the gun was mishandled by non-weapons experts. As they were unable to cite any of the disallowed material, prosecutors did use the autopsy report to suggest that when Sabich was struck he was bent over, facing away, and at least 1.80 m (6 ft) from Longet, which would be inconsistent with the position and relative distance of someone demonstrating the operation of a firearm.

The jury convicted her of a lesser charge — misdemeanor criminal negligence — and sentenced her to pay a small fine and spend 30 days in jail.[13] The judge allowed Longet to choose the days to be served, believing that this arrangement would allow her to spend the most time with her children. She chose to serve most of her sentence on weekends. * (Critical reaction to the verdict and sentencing was exacerbated when she subsequently vacationed with her defense attorney, Ron Austin, who was married at the time; Longet and Austin later married and still live in Aspen.) After the criminal trial, the Sabich family initiated civil proceedings to sue Longet. The case was eventually resolved out of court, with the proviso that Longet never tell or write about her story.

[edit] Recent yearsLonget has never performed again; her public appearances since the trial have been limited to writing liner notes for a 2005 CD compilation and providing voiceover (off-camera) commentary for a 2003 A&E Biography documentary about Williams. Interest in her music has resurged in recent years following several CD releases, inclusion of her songs on television and film soundtracks, and expressions of admiration by several young performers.[citation needed] Her musical legacy is rarely referenced, however, without allusion to the events that took her out of the public eye.

* - hence "Claudine's back in jail again/she only does it at weekends...."

It wouldn't surprise me if they did get an OK from her to release this now.
You got to cover all your bases. Besides, back then Claudine would never have come out anyway, but it was good publicity. I remember it being a carrot-and-the stick type of thing: first it was on the album, then it wasn't. Then it was, then it wasn't--back and forth. Indian Girl was kinda of the same. I remember Bob Hilburn of the LA Times wetting his knickers that Indian Girl was included before it came out (he was waiting for a political message).

I think the song was always an outtake to be honest, and the stones kind of used the nonsense of not releasing it " due to legal reasons" as a way of increasing their bad boy image. There really isnt anything really libelous in the song if you listen to the lyrics. she admitted to shooting the guy, and the judge ruled it was an accident.

The song never really did anything. It's just kind of there.

I'd heard about the song long before I finally heard the actual song, and since the subject matter was murder, I expected it to be a dark, howling, Gimme Shelter type song. So when I finally heard it, I was disappointed it was lighter in tone than I expected.

Have you even heard the song? "She shot him once right through the head, she shot him twice right through the chest". Plus Jagger is basically mocking her from the first second. Not to mention the sarcasm in almost every line.
