Ive searched the forum for a thread that tries to figure out this songs lyrics
but didn't find any.

Is this song about a hooker?
one of there greatest btw.

Through The Lonely Nights
(Jagger/Richards)

Through the lonely nights I think of you
Through the lonely hours I dream of you
I don't no why I do it, but I do
Why do you take it, what's wrong with you?

Through the lonely weekends I'm far from you
Why you're coming on, like you're supposed to do, yes
Oh, but you know me so well,
And your time ain't so hard to sell.

Every time I see ya
Every time I see ya
Every time I see ya
Every time I see you

In your cherry dresses and your shiny shoes
In a doorway on some neon avenue
Making the lonely pay for me
Why don't we set each other free.

When did I mislead ya
When did I misread ya
When did I mistreat ya
When did I deceive ya

Oh, I'm stuck out want to cry, cry, cry
Sleep in the doorway, Lord, making a rendezvous
Lord, I'm stuck out baby, want to cry cry cry cry cry cry cry
Lord, babe, I li, li, li, li, li Lord...

I always thought a flirtatious, game-playing Bianca, but I have no idea what some of these lines mean:
'Making your lonely pay for me...'

Jagger's lyrics are always so ambiguous....

Huh?
Maybe her charms are hard to resist?
lol....who knows?

Jagger has such an idiosyncratic way of putting things....it drives me crazy sometimes.
Reminds me of that scene in "Jumping Jack Flash", where Whoopi Goldberg is trying to decipher the lyrics to JJF - and she says..
'Mick, what does that mean? These are some weird-ass lyrics!'

"cherry dresses, shiny shoes, doorway on some neon avenue..."

"making a rendezvous"

sounds like a red light district area...

maybe Mick wrote it about a promiscuous girl??

id hate o think such a great song is meaningless....

But their never meanlingless. SOme say so, but I beg to differ.
Perhaps Jagger writes in opaque colors and vague references to keep them cloudy and mysterious, to keep us from knowing what or who he is singing about.
But I tend to think they all have some reality to them, that's what gives them resonance.

Paul McCartney had a hit with it. Oh, wait, that was NO MORE LONELY NIGHTS.

I think its about being stuck in a relationship, but wanting this other woman that you can't be with because of it... but can't let this other woman go either. You just can't be with this woman but you long for her. Something like that was always my take. I do think this song is one of their best.

"You'll be studying history and you'll be down the gym. And I'll be down the pub, probably playing pool and drinking."

yeah i can see it from that perspective,
That would kinda mean some lines are written rhetorically...

"Why do you take it, what's wrong with you?"

the "every time i see ya" part is totally
ambiguous if you read the lyrics without listening to the song.
it reads out like nonsense, it's a bit ridiculous.grinning smiley

the harder i try to interpret these lyrics the more confused i get...

I shoulda just left it alone and stuck with my hooker/promiscuos girl theory...

I think this song is the most underrated Stones music ever.... Surprised it didnt make an album.

She certainly sounds like a hooker - someone he shouldn't be with but can't resist:

"Through the lonely weekends I'm far from you
While you're coming on, like you're supposed to do..

And your time ain't so hard to sell.

In your cheery dresses and your shiny shoes
In a doorway on some neon avenue"

And the line about "making the lonely pay for me" (if those are the right words - it's a bit unclear but I can't hear what else it could be) really does sound as if he might be her pimp - or maybe just the one man in her life who doesn't have to pay.

There are a lot of "backstreet girls" in Stones lyrics: often written about with quite a lot of affection, like the lady who was Hot or Little T&A. Here's another one.

Love this song - always thought it was about an adulterous affair. But, I never understood a lot of the lyrics.

I like the song. I always thought it was an ode to Miss Obermeier.

"While you're coming on" makes more sense...thumbs up

but im pretty sure the dresses are cherry.

ok, so for the lyrics fit in hookers, promiscuous, backstreet girls...
very interesting thank you all...

Or maybe that's too literal. I always took those references to allude to role-playing, playing games in a relationship.

If You Really Want To Be My Friend - 'you play the vamp, I play the killer..'
Short and Curlies
Even in "Hey Negrita", the roles of pimp and hooker (maybe Mick and Bianca had some kind of kinky role-playing thing going on...lol
The prostitute, the pimp, the vamp, the killer - sounds like power games in a relationship, which would fit what many have surmised about Mick's marriage.
Just another way to look at it.
On a musical note: I love how Mick Taylor's solo leads into a whole different chord progression, and then into another chord progression with the 'When did I mistreat ya..'

This sound has that great MT/MJ melodic flourish that defined the ballads in that era.

Why you coming home like you're supposed to do?

Make it a lonely pain for me.
