Do Keith and Mick have writer's block?
Posted by: flilflam ()

I am just throwing this out for everyone to think about and hopefully respond to. Here are some pieces of circumstantial evidence to support my hypothesis:

Thier last group of original songs appeared on the A Bigger Bang CD in 2005, and since that time, to my knowledge, no new compositions have been released to the public.

The last batch of songs were older, redone songs from the Exile era.

In November we will be getting more songs from the Some Girls period. All of them will be songs composed long ago with possibly new vocals and guitar.

The Stones have not toured in a very long time and, when asked why, Mick and Keith give evasive answers. As a rule, they release a new album, then tour behind it.

I remember seeing an interview with Steve Tyler of Aerosmith. He said he went through a period with a severe case of song writer's block. He eventually hired someone to help him and the guitarist (forget his name) to write songs for a new album. He seemed pleased with his decision.

Are Mick and Keith suffering writer's block? Then how about getting Ronnie Wood more involved in the writing of songs? Or maybe someone else?

Richards writes books these days - no writer's block in that camp.

No writer's block.

The Glimmers can still write their stuff.
Just depends on how the general public would accept it.

I think, if keef and mick would have a warm friendship, they could sit down in a room, let the inspiration go wild and write some good stuff together, still.
But:
Reality is different. They dont have a warm friendship nowadays, have not written songs Together in One Room, for a long, long time..They are not inspired, to do it together anymore, to write songs for the Stones together. Thats a shame.
mick writes songs, keef too. They dont have a writers block. Rhey write songs for some ... project, or for a solo record.
Just hope, The SG release will be good, if keith releases an album it will be good.
Together, no those days are gone.
maybe, if a Good producer would inspire and fire them up again???
Don Was is not gonna do that.
Bye

It might have another name. How do you feel about Streets Of Love? That might be called writer's crap.

the bottom line is the stones dont enjoy doing it any more.

if they did we would have had new material since 2005.

and a new tour since 2007.

Yes! When they recorded Emotional Rescue, Undercover and Dirty Work. And they had players block during the 1981 tour.

Keith might, no evidence that Mick does. A Bigger Bang and the new songs on 40 Licks were both dominated by Mick on the writing. Keith hasn't made a major writing contribution (solo or group) since 1997.

If you have writers block please consider the advice offered by these 12 professional writers:-

Don't concede it exists.
(Richard Ford)

Ignore it: you never stop speaking; why stop writing?
(Quentin Crisp)

Take a walk.
(Nancy Hathaway)

Read.
(Amy Wallace)

Take five ice cubes, place in clean glass, add vodka.
(Phil Mushnick)

Try the element of surprise: attack it at an hour when it isn't expecting it.
(H.G. Wells)

Apply the seat of the pants to the seat of the chair.
(Mary Heaton Vorse)

Pretend to be writing to an aunt.
(John Steinbeck)

Write badly. Bad writing is easier.
(P.J. O'Rourke)

Write anything, anything at all that comes into your head.
(Stephen Spender)

Feel panic at how quickly life slips by. Get to work.
(Nicholson Baker)

Prescription for writer's block: Begin.

You are confusing writer's block with lack of inspiration. The latter is much worse than the former.

The difference is.....well; it's.....it's about using your brain on other things than what's.....ehem...no....but I nearly got it by now. Let me try again; you can say that.....well, maybe not; I suppose you couldn't...hmm....I'll be back a little later

This is a photograph of the man whom the Stones need to lean heavily on. This very talented man wrote Black Limousine, one of my all time favorites. Pay him what he is really worth, not a set salary, and then realize that he may be the cure to the Stones' difficulty in writing new material.

could it be that the former happens when the muse just ain't functioning...whereas the latter can be the result of being financially secure?

Was this "rule" not in place for Undercover and Dirty Work?

remember that ill-fated tv show - something about robbing mick jagger? maybe that was the right idea. steal the band's money and make them go back to work.

are there any other crooked-mined individuals out there who would care to hatch a caper with me? it's all for a good cause...

Wood was a salaried employee and remained so until Wyman's departure nearly two decades later, when Wood finally became a full member of the Rolling Stones' partnership

No they can't be bothered by each other now. I mean if Keith has not been to Micks dressing room pre shows in over 20 years [Very Sad ] they are hardly likely wanting to be in the same room let alone write songs together. They are no longer inspired by each other. The Marriage is over.

Bingo.

There is a difference between the muse not coming through and the muse packing up her memories and heading out the door.

just because nothing "new" has been released..doesn't mean they haven't been accumulating new material....saving
it for their next projects...solo or as the Stones.

as long as Mick has his rhyming dictionary...and 2 minutes in the back of Limo...he's writing. (as evidenced in BEING MICK)

Personally...I wish he'd take a little more time than 2 minutes.

IORR............but I like it!

None of them have given any indication that it's over. Though it's unlikely that they would return with a two year tour, I'm positive that there will be something happening next year.

I was just wondering the same thing. Actually I was thinking no matter in what condition the relation between Mick and Keith is.
Keith could sit at his home studio and write songs. Everytime he comes to let say 20 songs he could call Mick. Asking Mick if he would care to join and put out a record. If mick declines he could put them on a solo record and move on to the next 20 songs and ask Mick again the same question again.

But there seems to be none of that.

The first thing is, as posted above, that Jagger and Richards are not friends anymore. I do not think they have a block, but that they wrote and said what they wanred to write and say.
