The Redlands bust - 50 Years Ago Today

Around this time, 50 years ago, Keith heard a knock on the door. On a Sunday no less. Red letter date in Stones history.

Looking at my books on the Stones I always remember A.E. Hotchner's Blown Away as very enlightning regarding the 60s in Britain, the authority's attitude to young people, the role of the Police, the relevance of drugs.

I have conflicting opinions about this episode.
On the one hand, the Stones (and Brian and Keith, in particular) were set up and harassed by the police.
On the other hand, they were flagrantly breaking the laws at the time.

Not so flagrant, since they were in Keith's own home, and the law about allowing your home to be used etc. etc. was subsequently changed, largely as a result of this incident. As it should have been.

I still have all the press clippings from the time, and remember the drama of them going to jail, the fear that it would be for a long time, the fellow musicians like the Who rallying to show support, the relief when they were released . . It all seemed like a bizarre dream.

Why would anyone care about such a law.
A law that attempts to dictate to people what they should and shouldn't be ingesting into their own bodies is laughable pathetic and a complete waste of time and resources.

It is an inalienable right that every human can to do whatever they want
to do to themselves with Mars Bars in the privacy of a private residence.

I recall reading that the raid occurred only after George left because they couldn't be arresting a Beatle.

I wonder what would have happened if George and Patti decided to stay the night? Would the 15-20 police officers just waited in the bushes all night?

This is the reported list at Redlands that day:

1. Mick Jagger – singer of the Rolling Stones
2. Keith Richards – guitar player of the Rolling Stones, owner of Redlands country house
3. Marianne Faithfull – 20 years old and girlfriend of Mick
4. Christopher Gibbs – friend of Mick Jagger
5. Nicky Kramer or Cramer– The Kings Road Flower child
6. Robert Fraser – Art dealer and gallery owner
7. Mohammed Jajaj - Moroccan servant of Robert Fraser
8. David Schneidermann - Californian whose nickname was the Acid King
9. Michael Cooper – Photographer
10. George Harrison – Beatle, left with Patti Boyd before the bust
11. Patti Boyd – Girlfriend of George Harrison
12. Tony Bramell – Friend and associate of Beatles, left before bust

I've always wondered why Harrison and Boyd were there, as the camaraderie between the Stones and Harrison has never been written about much. And the Gibbs-Fraser-Cooper connection is definitely more towards McCartney.
I know they were all friends, but the Harrison connection is a bit distant.

HOWEVER: I did some investigating and came across this. The orchestral build-up for a Day In The Life was held on Friday, Feb 10. Visitors included Jagger, Richards, Faithfull, Tony Bramwell. So there's the invitation, I assume.
And on the 13th, a Monday, work was started on Harrison's Only a Northern Song.

Heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who read it in the National Inquirer who got it from the Daily Mail who read it in News of the World who got in trouble printing fake news about Mick Jagger so they sent in someone to tip off the law hoping to make the whole thing go away answering the question Who breaks a butterfly on a wheel... maybe... but it could all be fake
