The outtakes from the DW sessions really show that there was much better material that had been jump started, and that lay waiting. Obviously Jagger did not want to spend the time developing songs. Its a pity.
And it had to be Jagger - that's another thing the outtakes show.
I wonder if it was these lengthy sessions of Keith and Woody working with Covay and Womack, where he got into the way he likes to produce his backing vocals. All over his solo stuff with the Winos, and on his B2B, VL, SW, tracks he has this very dominating, busy, wordless style the he likes to employ.

Really agree with Palace. There are great outtakes from DW. Tracks with Covay and Womack, that would have made DW so much better.

and.. yeah, baby is one of the gems, imo.

Great track, Keith's best DW outtake IMHO and apparently it was worked on until B2B, unless that was another song under the same title.

What's funny is that Covay sounded a lot like Mick (or the other way round) and what everyone took for Mick on Invitation is in fact Don Covay! Dawned on me a couple of years ago and experts agreed ;-)

Baby, You're Too Much (For Me) is a great outtake, but not a great song especially lyric wise.
After working on it for years The Stones realised this and it was put away in the vaults.

There are some better Dirty Work Outtakes but not much:

Strictly Memphis (sounds finished)
Crushed Pearl
What Am I Gonna Do With Your Love
Victor Hugo...
Treat Me Like A Fool
Talk is Cheap...

Cut Your Throat was in the same mood as Can't Cut The Mustard sung by Ronnie which turned into ... HAD IT WITH YOU. One of the highlights on the Dirty Work album.

There were a lot of angry and negative (working) titles at the time...

FIGHT
DIRTY WORK
WINNING UGLY
Some Of Us Are On Our Knees
Stick It Where It Hurts

This is a raw embryo song by Keith with great piano by STU.
Charlie joining in halfway the song.

Could have been a classic...!

Edit: To me it is a classic outtake. smileys with beer

Love it, too, but I wouldn't call the lyrics finished or more evolved smiling smiley

Agreed, but the lyrics of VICTOR HUGO are more heartfelt and to the point in 1 take than the lyrics and music of Baby You Are Too Much For Me ( Choir joining: yeah yeah) after years and years of new takes...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

What's really pitiful is that without Mick Keef only had song embryos that had next to no appeal (except for us IORR crowd). grinning smiley
In 1985 Keef must have bitterly discovered he needed Mick badly to turn his rough demos into one might call Stones songs.

Keef couldn't reach Mick so he relied on Ronnie and Chuck's skills... the result was the band's worst album ever.

It sounded really good to start with but I gave up after the 97th "too much".

The take on Little Boy Blue... is a different version.

Backing could be trimmed down but always thought of the main vocal as Keith doin' a Don & Phil on his own ...
