Best/Favorite Guitar Solos In Rolling Stones Songs - Studio &/Or Live LPs
Posted by: GasLightStreet ()
Date: June 18, 2017 03:00

Saw that silly bit about the Top 100 guitar solos and some comments, thought I'd cut to the chase. Not a lot of time to go over it and make a ranking but a simple start will do for now:

Can't You Hear Me Knocking from STICKY FINGERS - SUPREME!
Sympathy For The Devil from GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! - Both are awesome!
Worried About You from TATTOO YOU - Killer!
Time Waits For No One - A stunning solo, really. Like watching a waterfall.
Dead Flowers from STRIPPED - Woody kills that one, excellently.
Under My Thumb from STILL LIFE - That is really the perfect guitar solo.
Start Me Up from FLASHPOINT - Ronnie... awesome.

That's enough for now. There are more.

Chime away.

Ry Cooder--"Sister Morphine"
Jimmy Page--"One Hit (To the Body)"
Harvey Mandel--"Hot Stuff"
Whatever Hendrix played with them backstage at MSG in '69

The one's that gives ME the chills are:

Keith:
Route 66
Around And Around
Sympathy For The Devil (studio + Ya-Ya's)
Live With Me (Ya-Ya's)
Little Queenie (Ya-Ya's)

Brian:
I Wanna Be Your Man
Little Red Rooster
-Brian's other parts on various instruments are also very good)

Taylor:
Love In Vain (Ya-Ya's)
Sympathy For The Devil (Ya-Ya's)
I Don't Know Why
Sway
Can't You Hear Me Knocking
-Plus a good deal of Brussels Affair as well, though he has a tendency of overplaying!)

Ronnie:
-Pretty much all of L.A. Forum 1975. Ronnie was totally on fire that night!
(Otherwise, I don't think he has stood out as a leadplayer on Stones records).

Ron Wood: LYL / You can't always get what you want.
Brian Jones: Little red Rooster.

Taylor- Sway
Wood- Beast of Burden

Live:

Richards- Honky Tonk Women '73
Taylor- Love in Vain (all versions, but '72 if I had to pick)
Wood- Wild Horses '75 (mainly because I love this song, never thought much of his live lead playing)

I love Keith's solo on Let Me Go (mostly the studio version, but Hampton and Leeds are great too).

These are all good ones, I agree, but I generally have a special liking for those very simple, nearly one-note solos. So, as brilliant as the above mentioned are (especially Taylor on Can't You Hear Me Knocking and both Keith and Taylor on Sympathy from Get Yer YaYa's Out), the ones I really get most pleasure, fun and delight from are:

- It's All Over Now (Brian? Keith?)
- Down the Road Apiece (Brian? Keith? Both?)

Keith. Brian mostly played solos (or rather themes/riffs) with slide (except for his percussive solo on Mona with tremolo).

Add Leeds 1971. It's practically identical. Mick forgot to say «play ya guitar boy», though winking smiley

From the thread title:

«Studio &/Or Live LPs»

Although intended for release, Philly 72 was unfortunately never released.

My choices would be somewhat different if we were to include not official stuff.
