Rate The Songs On 'Emotional Rescue'

I have been listening to the 'Emotional Rescue' album a lot of late, actually more so than any other Stones album. I have always rated it fairly low within the Stones catalogue, yet it does have some quite unique features when placed alongside the Stones more celebrated, and more consistent albums. Firstly it has a mildly experimental feel in places, a sort of quirkiness which is shared by few of the other albums released by the Stones. It attempts to assimilate new wave, as well as disco influences, as on 'Some Girls', and while perhaps the results are a little less consistent, the palate from which the Stones are working is actually much larger. There is also a little flirting with politics, who's theme was to be extended a little more on the 'Undercover' album. The album is wildly uneven in my opinion, sorely lacking in conviction in places, and yet it also is rather edgy too, igniting a spark which in terms of style is rather unique within the Stones catalogue.

My song ratings are as follows,

Dance 8
Summer Romance 6
Send It To Me 3.5
Let Me Go 3
Indian Girl 7
Where The Boys Go 6
Down In The Hole 9
Emotional Rescue 10
She's So Cold 6.5
All About You 9

A real mixed bag i feel in terms of quality. In fact i believe the first side of the original album represents one of the Stones most underwhelming listening experiences pre 'Undercover' with the placing of the filler tracks 'Send It To Me' and 'Let Me Go' side by side, yet things do pick up rather significantly later. I believe side two to be significantly stronger, especially with the tracks 'Down In The Hole', 'Emotional Rescue' the title track, and Keith's beautifully emotional 'All About You'. The album's poor reputation, justifiably so in my opinion, can result in the potential to overlook some very good moments within much undeniable mediocrity, and some of those moments very inspiring at that, too.

The album came after a MONSTER album that I don't think anyone would have dreamed they would have come up with.

The sophomore blues resulted and they (Mick) strived to come up with a follow-up with very mixed results. Disco worked last time, let's put that in...a few rockers, sure. Political song...sure, let's see what sticks.

Let's put it this way...it is a totally uninspired work and lacks any cohesion.

But with that said, even within it's mediocrity there are some great bits, (Emotional Rescue, Down In The Hole, She's So Cold, All About You, Dance), that still make this rise above anything most bands could put out 18 years into it. While there are some great songs, on here, I salute you Senor Twining, for having this be your go to Stones album of late. It's just a really hard album to listen to cover to cover.

I was just glad they were putting out another album relatively quickly. I recognized it straight off as a summer album with little depth. I don't think they even had any plans to tour on it. A couple gems, a few duds, with big arguments over Down In The Hold and Indian Girl. Ya either luv 'em or hate 'em.

A very quirky album. I remember when it first came out I so wanted it to be Some Girls part II. And I wanted it to rock with the punk attitude that SG had. ANd it didn't and I was a bit disappointed. And I felt the playing sounded a bit tiny and hollow with a different style and tone to Keith's guitar. Very 80's, and not as New York as SG.
But I like it. And appreciate it more now.

Lately this album gives me different impressions because I've been listening it on SACD.
SACD suggests that this album was developed by Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts except for Emotional Rescue and All About You.
Rhythm section is really driving hard.

Send it to me and let me go are no fillers to me. They both sound great, and i love them. Let me go is a respectable sequale as flip the switch among other songs, but very fine guitar and drumming playing.
Emotional rescue song is a master pice of i-don't-know-what-kind-of-music; it is not a stoner, but unique.
She's so cold i so commercial, but the sound of drums and guitars made it unique (MXR compresosr and delay)
Dance is so good
Down in the whole a very underrated song; one of the best of Stone's catalogue, as well as KR's all about you, a littel masterpiece.
Summer romance is fine, as well as where the boys go, but IMHO are the weakest part of the album.
Indian girl is nice, very good RW licks, but very similar to YCAGWYW

If comparing to 1963 - 1972 I don't rate any songs that highly, though I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the title track & both 'Let Me Go' & 'She's So Cold' were great live (though mediocre on record).

Dance 8 - this is a prime example how the Stones' live performances will change the image of a song for me. Never thoight too much of the song - too long. "If I was a dancer" was always better IMO. Then they started doing Dance live and it took off.
Summer Romance - 7-8, they did good to leave it off SG
Send it to me 5 - the reggaefied "Beast of Burden"
Let Me Go - 7
Indian Girl - 8
Where Boys Go - 8
Down in the Hole 9
Emotional Rescue 10
Shes so Cold 8
All About you 9-10

I realize that I prefer Side 2

Thats interesting. At the time, it was the longest gap ever between two Stones albums (two years).

It was first mooted as coming out in late 1979. It seemed to take forever for them to release it.

It's interesting how this album is perceived by the public as the tossed off follow up to SG, and made up from songs left over from those sessions. When in fact they spent two separate sessions recording it in '79 and most of the songs on ER come from those sessions not the SG ones.

Also, the bulk of side 1 of TTY is comprised of songs from the ER sessions. I remembered reading in Wyman's book about Mick and Keith fighting over the mixing of the album too, which helped to hold up its release. I thought I remember reading in the same book about a different ER tracklisting during that period as well. So no matter of the result, and I think time has been kind to ER, the band did put a lot of effort into it. ER is not a tossed off work made up of leftovers. It's production sound is quite different than SG too. I think it's overlooked and underappreciated.

ER is a very eclectic mix of songs and those sessions spawned 1 1/2 albums of material. The problem is that while all the songs are good there is nothing exceptional (maybe Down In The Hole) making it the first truly mediocre-by their standards Stones album. ER does have a tossed off feel to it but that seems to be by design rather than effort. Because judging by the two separate '79 sessions the band worked hard on it.

Dance- 1 of the 2 best tracks on the album.
Summer Romance- Good but sounds like lies or respectable.
Send it to me- Good. Grows on you after awhile.
Let me go-OK. The live version is superior.
Indian Girl-sucks
Where the boys go-OK but the girl voices at the end are cheesy.
Down in the hole-Tries to be bluesy but doesn't have the latter day charm of black limousine.
Emotional Rescue-One of the best Stones song ever! The groove on this is sick! Even Jagger's falsetto holds up somehow.
She's so cold-Good, but the radio has beat it to death.
All about You-Boring.Another "I'm Keith and I get to sing one" song.

I prefer to play it in this order :

Dance
Summer Romance
Send It To Me
Emotional Rescue
Indian Girl

Let Me Go
Where The Boys Go
Down In The Hole
She's So Cold
All About You

Emotional Rescue fits well after the reggae Send It To Me as does Indian Girl after ER.
Then you have a stronger side 2.

Dance - sounds like Mick solo to me, but in a good way. Fun and catchy as hell.
Summer Romance - Kind of second-tier song like Luxury from IORR. Fun but unimportant.
Send It To Me - Stones Fake Reggae gets on my nerves. Silly lyrics. A miss.
Let Me Go - I actually prefer the faster live version from Still Life.
Indian Girl - A very convincing song delivered from English millionares. (bahaha)
Where The Boys Go - muddy, non catchy in an "everything's turning to gold" kind of way. And wtf is with Mick's fake cockney?
Down In The Hole - sounds like a Some Girls outtake, probably is. I dunno. I loved this as a teen, but now. Meh.
Emotional Rescue - I can't take this song seriously at all. Does anyone??
She's So Cold - for me, best song on the album by FAR.
All About You - one of the better Keith vocal tracks we're made to endure.

I love all the songs on this album.

The only thing I'd have changed if I was producing would be the vocals on "Where The Boys Go", I'd have asked Jagger to tone down the common cockney youthful punk accent a bit. So for that, it only gets a 6, whereas everything else gets a 7 or 8 out of 10.

Love this album, very underrated!!!!
