It would have been a tad better but certainly not a "classic".

Keith & Don (Was) would've ruined it.

Charmed Life ?!? ... Huh, not for me!

Songs like Wired All Night, Wandering Spirit and Out of Focus has some Stones credibility. A little more Keith edge to them and they could have added something good to the album.

Glad it didn't happen. Rubin's production was perfect (as Sleepy City said, Don Was would've ruined it) and that proposed tracklist in the original post is horrific. Always hated Voodoo Lounge, and that tracklist up there represents the absolute worst of that POS album.

I'm afraid you have to replace Wandering Spirit with a Jagger-only-composition.

Why do we? On Steel Wheels we had "Almost Hear You Sigh" (Jagger/Richards/Steve Jordan), & on Bridges To Babylon we had "Thief in the Night" (Jagger/Richards/Pierre de Beauport).

Charmed Life? That song should have stayed locked up. It's horrible.

When I listen to the vocal on "Charmed Life," I don't hear Jagger from 1992 at all. It definitely sounds more recent. Plus what we hear has been filtered through Ashley Beadle's sensibilities. Who knows what the original demo sounded like.

I don´t like the idea of the Stones playing the song Wandering Spirit.
The version with Jimmy Rip is a masterpiece the way it is. Truly genious.
Evening Gown, Hang On To Me Tonight and Don´t Tear Me Up could have worked
with the Stones, though.

When I play that album, I'm always sorry Mick didn't do more work with Jimmy Rip. Had Mick and Keith alternated Stones albums with Keith's X-Pensive Winos projects and Mick working with this line-up under Jimmy Rip, I would have been quite pleased. Sadly, Stones tours got longer and so did the gaps between albums. They made several fortunes in the process, but I think too long on the road actually hurt them creatively in the long run.

"Charmed Life" and "Wandering Spirit" twice - rather "Out of Focus" and "Put me in the Trash".

"Charmed Life" is at or near the bottom of my list of least favorite Jagger songs. I like "Let's Work" better.

In difference to the Jagger-co-compositions I regard the credit to Steve Jordan as a bow to him. Talk Is Cheap was Keith's first one, all songs were composed and produced by both. If you listen to the demo (as Stones' Steel Wheels attempt) I get the imagination it is 100 % Keith. It certainly was a necessity to mention him as the song was of course a leftover of the Wino's session.
At least, Mick had enough Mick-only songs on Wandering Spirit to fill Voodoo Lounge.
A 'stranger' as a co-composer still had to be the exception and Thief In The Night is prove to the rule, so to say.
An interesting question might be what kind of 'quota' of Jagger-Jagger, Richards-Richards and actual Jagger-Richards songs can be guessed in the mid 90s for a Rolling Stones long player?!
By the time of A Bigger Bang I guess only the Keith sung songs were by Keith, the rest was Jagger-Jagger.

I doubt that. Mick's songs don't generally rely on half-baked riffs the way so many latter-day Keith songs have done (with & without the RS).

I liked Voodoo Lounge mostly - to tell you the truth I really only disliked "Suck On The Jugular", and got sick of "Love Is Strong" pretty quickly.

1."Love Is Strong" – 3:46
2."You Got Me Rocking" – 3:40
3."Sparks Will Fly" – 3:15
4."The Worst" – 2:25
5."New Faces" – 2:50
6."Moon Is Up" – 3:41
7."Out of Tears" – 5:25
8."I Go Wild" – 4:23
9."Brand New Car" – 4:13
10."Sweethearts Together" – 4:45
11."Suck on the Jugular" – 4:26
12."Blinded by Rainbows" – 4:33
13."Baby Break It Down" – 4:08
14."Thru and Thru" – 6:00
15."Mean Disposition" – 4:08 (not included on LP version

Ouch. That must've been very painful to type that.

It's one of my favourite songs on the album, along with Moon Is Up & Sweethearts Together (Out Of Tears & Love Is Strong aren't bad either). It's just some of those generic riff rockers + the Keith ballads that I find a little boring.

I agree that in case Mick (& Keith, by the way) would have kept their best songs from Wandering Spirit and Main Offender for the Stones, Vodoo Lounge could have been the one album that would have blown all albums since Tattoo You out of the water. There are simply too many songs on Voodoo Lounge that are "not bad", but not very good or even great either. I don't know many people other than diehard Keithaholics who can listen to Thru And Thru all the way through, but I have experienced many times that whenever Hate It When You Leave came up on one of my mix tapes back in the day that someone mentioned what a lovely song it was. Same goes for New Faces and Angel In My Heart. Outside of Stones fans circles people would rather listen to a song like Wandering Spirit than Mean Disposition, or Don't Tear Me Up than Baby Break It Down, or Sweet Thing than Suck On The Jugular or Evening Gown than Sweethearts Together or Out Of Focus than ... whatever. Shit, even a B-Side like The Storm sounds cooler than Brand New Car which simply goes on ones nerves after some minutes.

Classic Stones albums usually include a lot of great songs, and that's the reason why Tattoo You is regarded as the last one. Voodoo Lounge could have been a classic, but a collection of "not bad" stuff is not good enough.

Fact is that Mick and Keith's songwriting in the early 90's had the potential to add another (probably the last) classic album to the Stones catalog, but they missed the chance because they chose to produce three albums (two solo, one Stones) with their output instead of one true "Big Bang".

Sweet Thing, Evening Gown, and Don't Tear Me Up would have been Stones classics.
