Winwood is amazing, and still is--he's still got most of that top register. Incredible voice.

One of the all time best - I never miss him when he's in town (or if I'm in the same town he's playing).
Be it the Traffic reunion, to co-headliner with Clapton, to many of his solo shows - never been disappointed.
From Hollywood/L.A., to Vegas, to Amsterdam - always great! thumbs up

Like some of Winwood solo, love early Traffic, but for English soul, give me Eric Burdon back in the day and some later. And in another whole realm of English soul, check out Dave Mason's "Alone Together". Ain't a bad cut on it. And, for that matter, Joe Cocker's first album is up there.

Joss Stone comes to mind. What a voice!

Hmm--I love Eric Burdon, but I wouldn't term his a "soul" voice. I'm not big on categorization, though, so maybe others do. But to my mind he belongs to the blues category.

Winwood, Burdon, Gary Brooker, and Van Morrison have amazing UK soul voices. Throw in the deceased Joe cocker and Jack Bruce, and you'd be hard pushed to find better soul singers.

Creem magazine once interviewed Elton John about who would pick to be in his "dream band."

He said that he would put Rod Stewart and Paul Rodgers on vocals, adding that together they would be "the white Sam & Dave."

English soul? Not many soulful English singers, in my most humble opinion.

Only three: Mick Jagger (when he wants to), Dusty Springfield, and (sometimes before the sloppy drunk kicks in) Amy Winehouse.

Boy George?
There was a lot of good 'English soul' in the 80s -- I think they did it better than Americans because they had more fun with it, didn't feel as obligated to sound like the original stuff.
