CS BLUES: THE SINGLE
Posted by: jlowe ()
Date: September 6, 2016 00:24

Also referred to as Schoolboy Blues.
Written in 1970, when Mick and Keith's songs were still 'owned' by ABKCO.
YET, Publishing credits state EMI COLGEMS who took over the publishing role from 1972.
Anyone know why?
Did Klein not want it because he knew it would never get an official release?
Has anyone ever recorded and released a cover version?

It should be be pointed out that the Stones owed Decca, not London or ABKCO, one last single to fulfil their contract with them.
The Stones gave them C-sucker Blues which the label was obviously never going to be able to release but the band had honoured the agreement so there was nothing that Decca could do about it.
Instead, they grabbed "Memo From Turner" from the "Performance" soundtrack and released that as a single.

So they agree with a solo song............

Which is the 'official' version? I pulled down a version from Napster/LimeWire years ago when they were still in existence. I have another version from the Black Box bootleg, entitled School Boy Blues, but it's the same song.

Many thanks for all the info.
Still no explanation though as to why, as the song was recorded in May 1970, it never ended up as an ABKCO song publishing copyright.
Allen Klein usually never let go of anything.

I've got 2 versions on Westwood One radio show cd's. I'm assuming at least one is the original single. Not sure of the sources but they both sound better than anything I've heard on boots.

It may be because it was the last single (song) they owed on the contract. If it's not releasable but finishes the contract, well... why bother. You can bet though that if some label wanted to lease it that it would be an ABKCO Music publishing.

Because it was never released.

The point I'm making is the lyrics have been c) EMI Publishing who were their music publishing company from the early 70's to mid 80's.
C S Blues was written/ recorded in May 1970.
Klein got the publishing copyrights for four Exile tracks because they were written before the expiry of his Management contract.
Songs are often copyrighted whether they get released or not.
I assume the 'recording copyright' is held by ABKCO..not sure.

Oh yeah. I tend to forget that because all you ever see for publishing since 1970something, HOT ROCKS I guess, is ABKCO Music on everything.

As CS Blues was never published and released it was never copyrighted. Only officially released tracks will be and are registered.

I doubt it was never copyrighted. Just by recording it it was legally copyrighted.

Have a look at the ASCAP Title Search, for say, Mick Jagger.
I m sure there are references to registered works but not released songs?

Of course it was copyrighted.
If it wasn't I could record it and claim I wrote it.

CS Blues was released by DECCA in Germany as a bonus single with a 4 LP Box set.
