"Not all of their songs were as innocent as they seemed. "Pure and simple, 'Poison Ivy' [a 1959 hit they wrote for The Coasters] is a metaphor for a sexually transmitted disease – or the clap – hardly a topic for a song that hit the Top Ten in the Spring of 1959," Leiber said in 2009. "But the more we wrote, the less we understood why the public bought what it bought.""

The blatant contempt for the Rock and Roll "fad" by the establishment was on full display. It puts the whole Dean Martin dissing the Stones thing in perspective.

JailHouse Rock was the song that turned me on to Rock & ROll when I was a wee one.

Truly one of THE GREAT songwriters of ALL-Time. In "Life," Keith references going to Tin Pan Alley and trying to see him in the Stones' early days. He didn't meet with the boys but did write, "Down Home Girl," along with Mike Stoller.

A genuine national (and musical) treasure. God bless, RIP.

I believe one indicator of a great composer is if the material (song) is adaptable to reinterpretation -- consider:

Rest in peace, Jerry.

Here's Hound Dog how it's supposed to sound, Big Mama Thornton, featuring Buddy Guy:

Artie Butler co-wrote Down Home Girl, certainly not Keith.

Last night at about five to six the BBC Radio 4 announcer said (very quietly):

...er, this is a bit embarrassing ... we seem to have two minutes 13 seconds to fill before the weather forecast .... now how can we fill 2:13?

and he played ( VERY LOUD )

... explained afterwards that it was a tribute to Jerry Leiber, " - and apparently that just set off smoke alarms all over the UK."
