Really looking forward to this DVD! A very under-appreciated group.

Great! Hollies was the first English band I saw live and the year was 1968...btw did you noticed in the video that everyone had the same look that Keith usually has when he is talking about the good old days ..

I highly recommend the recent 6-CD box-set of the complete 1963-1968 Nash Years:

Are there any good mono reissues of their mid-60s albums? The Sundazed versions I have are in that ear-splitting stereo mix with the vocals/band separation.
The mono version of Carrie-Anne is incredible, but I only have it on various mid-60s AM radio checks I have.

All their 60s albums were issued as Mono / Stereo CDs a few years back.

Incidentally the recent box-set uses the mono versions for all those tracks with the horrible stereo "vocals out of one speaker" mix, in particular the great 'Evolution' album.

Here's a lengthy feature on The Hollies' Nash-era recordings which I wrote a couple of years back: [themargatemusicman.blogspot.com]

Hey, that article looks good. Thanks for the info. I'd like to find a good mono version When Your Lights Turned On, one of their best songs. I asked Graham Nash once about Ye Old Toffee Shop and he almost blushed with embarrassment. I bought Evolution years ago on Imperial, but I can't remember if it's mono or stereo. I think it's stereo but not like the Sundazed reissue. Indeed, Evolution is an incredible record.

I think Nash has always been very conflicted about his work with the Hollies. I once saw him play a rare solo gig, where you might have expected him to do a couple Hollies numbers, but he didn't, and when someone did call out for "Bus Stop", he looked mortified. I guess his reason for leaving was that he wanted to be in a situation where he could write and record "better" material. Whether or not he ever achieved this remains a matter of opinion.

Love The Hollies and its about time that fans got a well put together official DVD compilation. I've bought various semi-legit ones over the years.

There's some great footage out there to be had - saome lovely clips from The Smothers Brothers shows I got a few years ago and I've now found there's a whole show from Italy 67 - so still with Nash in the band.

On the audio front there's a couple of amazing French releases of both Evolution and Butterfly with loads of extras including one of their most incredible songs called Schoolgirl, written by Graham Gouldman and very much in the vein of No Milk Today and Bus Stop.

If you've never heard this then be amazed.....it's almost proto-punk. You could imagine The Buzzcocks covering this in 76/77.

Are you sure about this??? I'm a big Hollies fan but I've certainly never seen this footage (maybe you're confusing it with the Croatia '68 concert?). eye popping smiley

There's something on this list.

NME Pollwinners Concert 1964 (2), Top Of The Pops 1964 (2), Hullabaloo 1965 (2), Shindig 1965,
Live in Holland 1965, Beat Club 1966, On A Carousel Promo 1967, Beat Beat Beat 1967,
The Smothers Brothers 1967, Italian TV 1967, Jennifer Eccles Promo 1968, Beat Club 1968 (2),
Top Of The Pops 1969, Beat Club 1969, Musikladen 1969, U.S TV 1970, Disco 1971, UK TV 1973 & 1974

I know the Split, Croatia gig is about 30 mins long. I'm convinced I saw one of my regular contacts advertising an Italian gig from 67.

There's also a Helsinki gig from 69 but that's kinda past my interest time.

There's a mimed promo video or two from Italy in 1967, but certainly not a "whole gig".

The Helsinki "gig" is just a mimed TV appearance (about 30 minutes long).

'Musikladen' is the same show as Beat Club, it was renamed in 1972 (not 1969).

The Hollies did play Split, Croatia in 1968?

That is very interesting, because in 1968 there was only one Jugoslavija.

Marsal Tito by the way really did like The Hollies. It was like the 3rd way. Something in between Stones and Beatles, at that time.

The Hollies --One of these really great bands that never get the respect due them-

I had the pleasure of meeting Graham Nash a number of years ago and he turned me on to another Hollies project I never knew about: in 1966 the Everly Bros were sent to England to record and album and the Hollies were the backing band ( along with then studio-wiz Jimmy Page and a couple of Manfred Man's ), the album was called 'Two Yanks in England' and almost all the material was supplied by the Hollies. Nash said it was one of the the most fun times he ever had in the stud

Check out the album -- its killer

Yes, a wonderful album! It's fun to compare The Everlys versions to The Hollies versions on those songs, see below (The Hollies version was recorded first & features Tony Hicks playing the blistering solo, & The Everlys version features Jimmy Page playing a similar solo - apparently he asked Tony Hicks for tips on how to get that guitar sound!)...

THE HOLLIES!!

Wonderful music

IMO much much better then this group called The Beetles (or was it Beatles, I always forget about their name)

Absolutely! And far better at recreating their sound on stage too, check out this clip from 1966:

I think Nash has always been very conflicted about his work with the Hollies. I once saw him play a rare solo gig, where you might have expected him to do a couple Hollies numbers, but he didn't, and when someone did call out for "Bus Stop", he looked mortified. I guess his reason for leaving was that he wanted to be in a situation where he could write and record "better" material. Whether or not he ever achieved this remains a matter of opinion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there was a Q or Mojo magazine article a few years ago about CSNY, and they asked each member which of their former bands was better: The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, or the Hollies. A fun question, really. Crosby said the Byrds, Stills and Young said the Springfield, and good old Nash never stuck up for his old buddies and said the Springfield were better.

Actually the question was who were the most cool, not who were better. As Graham pointed out, he's very proud of his work with The Hollies but they were never considered cool...

What are you trading these Hollies dvds for? Or should I contact you privately, thks

Contact me privately, but I collect a wide range of 50s-60s-70s artists on DVD (+ movies), so I'm quite easy to trade with: @#$%[email protected]

Please note (for those in the USA without compatible machines) that my DVDs are in PAL. smiling smiley

Which music-DVD is your best? smoking smiley (my guess: Don't look back/Pennebaker)

Definitely not (I'm not a big Dylan fan though I don't dislike his early stuff). There's too many to choose from, but The T.A.M.I. Show, RS R&R Circus, Performance & Flame are up there with the best of them.
