Compare the Stones to Muhammad Ali

1) They were called the greatest

2) Both enjoy a territory where they stay unchallenged

Ali's fights could sometimes be boring, with Ali being just busy enough to impress the judges, who were already predisposed to give him the decision and let him retain his title because the champ always gets the benefit of the doubt. Not at all unlike what goes on at a Stones concert.

Both stepped all over The Beatles and knocked them out. Well, sort of!

Some of you youngsters won't remember, but there was a time people payed $30 (when a concert ticket was only $8.50) to sit in a movie theatre and watch something like this on live closed circuit television.

Both of them 'shook up the world' from 1964 onwards.

Both of them were singled out and victimised by the establishment around the same time ('67 - '70) when they were around their peak and their most influential.

Both of them came back and reached the top of their profession after a few years of inactivity.

Both of them affected their legacy slightly by continuing a bit longer than necessary.

Both of them were surrounded by too many yes-men for their own good.

Well, I guess it seemed like a good idea on paper, but who knew the wrestler would spend the entire fight laying on his back, trying to kick Ali in the shins? One of the biggest pay-per-view fiascos of the 70s, right up there with Evel Knievel's Snake River Canyon "jump". Btw, if the Beatles had staged a reunion concert in the 70s, it would have been experienced in exactly the same way; live closed circuit broadcast in movie theatres around the world. It probably would have been every bit as disappointing and anti-climatic as Ali and Knievel.

Well Inoki's always been shite. Should have had Hulk Hogan. Then we'd end up with something like this.

Someone on TV--I think it was Geraldo Rivera--actually compared the Stones to Ali already.

He was talking about their career longevity. This was 1978.

I also compared Mick to Ali when he released the awful, embarrassing "Just Another Night," with that painful '80's production that didn't contain one listenable moment.

I said it was Mick's D-Con commercial

Sometimes Mick's dancing could be described as 'floating like a butterly' but does he 'sting like a bee'?

Yep...but only once in the same year (1972). (Ali fought at both the 'current' MSG and the one that preceded it)

Lots of other 'venues' in common - [boxrec.com]

Ali won his 3rd heavyweight title at the Superdome in New Orleans, just a couple of months after the Stones had played there.

Ali was known as the Louisville Lip. The Stones most recognizable 'brand' is a set of lips.

U2 met Ali in 1987/88 and U2 have met the Stones.

Both Ali and The Stones have shared a concert stage with Bob Dylan.

Both hung on longer than they should have let the world see them in decline.

Both of them were involved in the opening of a summer olympics ceremony.

(ok, at least one of them was, and the other was rumoured to for a long time on this board).

I've been inspired by both: By the Stones to take up guitar, and by Ali to take up boxing. I have met Keith Richards and Muhammad Ali - both amazing moments I will never forget.
