BOBBY KEYS 1973: AFTERMATH
Date: May 13, 2007 00:47

We all know Bobby was 'shipped home' somewhere in Germany, '73. What happened to him from then 'til he played with band in LA in '75 at the LA forum? We didn't have rehab in those days. Did he drift around? I understand Keith was angry and hurt that his best party buddy couldn't keep up with the pace?

I heard that in the 70s he played in a club in LA and called himself "Mr. Brown Sugar".

"Mr Bitch", loool. Is it Keith who decided who stays and who has to go? I think so. You'd think it's Mick but Keith "forced" Brian, Taylor, Cooder, Preston and others out.

ryanpow is right (no, I don't want to open up another Mick Taylor thread!) but it's Bobby who starts the CYHMK jam and it's Mick T who responds to him and, therefore - if anyone - it's Bobby who should get credits for the song.

Don't think I have ever seen a shot from the 79 Barbarian tour where Ron and Keith didn't lok very @#$%& up. They must have been zipped the whole tour.

I would rather think it was Mick who kicked Bobby out in '73, since Keith and Bobby were pretty close. Did he actually @#$%& something up on stage, or what happened?

Well, he blew a big mean solo on a #1 hit for John Lennon in the Fall of '74 ("Whatever Gets You Through The Night") that was all over the radio.

>> what happened? <<

it's just that evil life had got him in its sway for a while there -
i don't know the details, just that he went overboard with the extravagant partying,
forgot he's not a Rolling Stone - that sort of thing.

relatedly, can someone answer this please?
who is the sax player (and other horn players) that they had for the remainder of '73 once Bobby was canned? just curious...was listening to brussels 10-73 this morning and the horn section was particularly smooth, hot and impactful...don't think i've ever heard better horns used more crushingly or beautifully at any other live stones show i've seen or heard...sophistiscated and smooth, and turning on a dime very punctuation sharp and silvery...
some absolutely great sax on gimme shelter and they gave him a big longass solo after taylor's vibranto performance...(my own new truthy work, a mixture of vibrant and vibrato) smiling smiley

also this guy absolutely nailed nailed nailed the brown sugar solo; totally nailed it...brilliant sax guy, who was/is he??
ty.
__ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
p.s. the lead post mentions a german gig; i thought the very last gig of that tour (and that version of the band too) was in Germany, immediately after the belgium shows (and after Keys was removed)...
isn't that true? or was there an earlier German gig on that tour where Bobby performed?

yes..he toured with him and Bobby Vee when he was about 14. Not sure if he actually played in Holly's band though - more likely Vee's I would have thought.

dylan's early love was bobby vee records; he had even gotten a couple of gigs playing piano for him on the mid-west, before he was even writing or playing guitar...dylan talks about it in 'chronicles'
____
Gazza, could you please answer my question from my post a couple of posts above this one??? thank you.

Trevor Lawrence and Steve Mandaio did the horn/sax after Bobby Keys left in early October, or late September...though I think it was just after Hamburg on Oct 2nd. Surprised to see that Steve Madaio also toured with Dylan, for his maybe best tour, 5 years later.
After the 2 shows in Brussels, they did the final show of the tour in Berlin.

EH, Beelyboy, I was just checking what I wrote about Madaio, and I can't seem to find it anywhere. Maybe I just dreamt it...?

Sorry, that was an error from me, no Madaio on Bob's 78 tour, geez where did I read it in the first place ?

well thanx for checking Erik: whoever it was that played that bs solo and also the long solo after taylors' in gs at brussels, whoever that guy was...just amazing...they loosened up the arrangement and just let that guy fly...came on brilliantly and seamlessly right after taylor's extended lead...and some vicious rhythm hits by keith...it's quite the thing...

"The long solo after Taylor in GS..." I think you meant YCAGWYW, and yes that's such a brilliant way to end Taylors solo, gives a kind of "on air" atmosphere
But Gimme Shelter...the intro there, especially from London...-I think you got that version on Europe 73?-...the guitar and sax plays the same notes in the intro. They mangle so perfect, those instruments, it's almost difficult to seperate the sax from Taylor. BUT Bobby Keys was with Stones in London, but it's played in the same style in Brussels....so maybe either Lawrence or Madaio did those parts anyway? One of them was present from the very beginning.

they do some nice touches with the horns on Brussells all down the line towards the end of the song. I really love that version. they play two of the same note in a row but the second not fades out it goes like "Booom- booooooooooooooooom"
