It's the Mirror, take it with a grain of salt....

The Rolling Stones under 24-hour armed guard after gig worker is shot dead

The Satisfaction hitmakers have top-level security escorting them everywhere during their tour in South America

Rock legends The Rolling Stones are under 24-hour armed guard during their South American tour - after a worker at one of their gigs was shot dead.

The ageing rockers, currently in Buenos Aires, Argentina, have top-level security escorting them everywhere in the dangerous region for their America Latina Ole tour.

They have taken no chances with their safety while in the gun and kidnapping hotspot - travelling in separate cars and surrounding themselves with the world’s best private security operatives.

Sources say the intense protection plan is being executed with “military precision”, and has been stepped up after a man was shot dead in a botched attempt to steal the drinks takings from their packed out show at La Plata stadium.

The band are next scheduled to perform in Brazil, Uruguay, Peru and Colombia - renowned as one of the world’s most dangerous countries.

A source said: “Of course these things are all considered well in advance of a tour, and massive bands like The Rolling Stones are well aware of the risks posed by these places - so they take no chances.

“Wealthy personalities are always potential targets, but the band are kept safe and secure at all times by the best security personnel on the planet.

“They choose their hotels carefully, travel in separate vehicles which also reduces the risks, and are surrounded by armed security.”

The shooting at this week’s gig came as three cars tried to intercept a van carrying the booze takings from the concert after it left the stadium.

The man killed, a 55-year-old contractor named Pedro Luis Tabares, was a passenger in the van in the early hours of the morning after he and colleagues left the gig.

Police say the assault gang had inside information including details of the cash their targets were carrying and the route they had decided to take from the concert venue.

A 31-year-one Colombian, named locally as Jhon Alexander Bobadilla Vega, was later arrested.

Tonight sees the band perform their final gig in Argentina before travelling to Uruguay, but the rockers - led by Sir Mick Jagger - will first enjoy a private meeting with new Argentinian president Mauricio Macri.

The meeting is due to take place at the right-wing leader’s private home in San Miguel.

The band have become experts in organising the logistics of their tours after five decades on the road together - but were famously at the centre of a disastrous incident after hiring the Hells Angels motorbike gang to police a gig in 1969 - which ended in disaster as the bikers drunkenly failed to retain control.

Does anyone doubt that the Rolling Stones " have top-level security escorting them everywhere during their tour" as a matter of routine, planned in advance? Is this news?

Well, I'm glad they're taking the precaution of travelling in separate cars. Their usual Subaru carpool was begging for trouble.

Yes it is the Mirror, and of course they have experienced security guys,
and the poor dead guy seems to be a refreshments-services employee not a "Stones gig worker",
but all the same: All kinds of blessings and well-being on the Rolling Stones

i've said this before. in spring 1994 clinton was in cleveland and stayed at some 5 star hotel. the stones came through in september and stayed at the same hotel. according to the hotel staff the stones had better security than clinton. true? don't really know but their security in SA will be ready for anything.

Clinton is one and the Stones are four plus side musicians and crew so they must have bigger security.

There was no alcohol of any sort on sale at La Plata - only coffee and soft drinks! The merchandise takings may be quite high I suppose........

Wow, if this is true I feel sorry for the family/friends of the poor guy who was shot. Thoughts and prayers go out to them... From what I understand, this kind of thing doesn't happen very often. Pretty rare. But still sad when it does

I've stayed at Cleveland's Ritz Carlton over a dozen times - when the Stones, Springsteen, Arab emirs and princes, etc. have been in residence and when they haven't. One time I was on the penthouse floor when an emir was at the other end of the hall. The security was the tightest when the Stones were there - there were hotel security on every floor at every door leading from the stairwells. Not so for the emir. On the lower floors (two or three out of seven) where a keycard is not needed to get out of the elevator - security was outside of Stones' family member rooms all night.

I know this because I love the Ritz Carlton emery boards and each floor has an unlocked storage room with the elevators for staff (maids, room service) where the Kleenex, toilet paper, toiletries, chocolate sticks, sewing kits, robes, emery boards, towels, sheets, etc. are kept. For some reason, not every floor's storage room has a stash of emery boards and chocolate sticks. On my 2am emery board and chocolate stick raids, I'd use the stairwells to get from one storage room to the next.

When the Stones are in residence, you're not getting out of the stairwell unless your room is on that floor. When Springsteen and government rulers are there - only the penthouse floor is an issue.

Back to the time I was on the penthouse floor with the emir, there's a lounge next to the elevators with snacks, fruit, appetizers, muffins, sandwiches, desserts and drinks - the food depends on the time of day. I'm checking out and as I'm waiting for the elevator I notice muffins and cookies. One hand is loaded with luggage and another with a letter I planned to mail. I decide some snacks on my five hour drive home would be nice. Maybe a couple of muffins for breakfast the next couple of days. I lay the letter on the table and add some cookies and muffins to a shopping bag on the other arm.

A few minutes and seven floors later I'm heading to the front desk to mail the letter. Only I don't have it. I have three muffins and four cookies instead. I'd left my keycard in my room - so the elevator isn't going to take me anywhere. Nor do I want to climb seven floors.

I ask the front desk for a keycard to retrieve the letter - but the room was in a friend's name and my license doesn't match that name. Finally they decided to send the assistant manager up to retrieve my letter. I often wondered what would have happened if Mick and Keith were on the floor instead of a mere emir.
