Or are we just wasting trees? Is there any angle left uncovered or is there any account we need to hear?

We still need a truly accurate recording sessions book as Mark Lewisohn did with The Beatles (unfortunately full details of dates, personnel, etc were never logged for most RS sessions).

Yep.

And in depth book on their recording history (ideally featuring interviews with the band and/or people who have worked with them) plus full sessionography.

Certainly a gap in the market for that.

Hard to get accurate session details for the Stones though as so many sessions were done at mobile studios and they made albums all over the world. Almost everything The Beatles recorded was done in one studio, owned by their record company.

A book about the '72 Jamaica sessions and '73 tours.

I suspect any good new biography would uncover something. The question is would it be worth buying a book for a page or two of new info?

Oh definitely, I can think of several angles.

A definitive Woodie biography written by Andy Neal who just published the Faces book. Similar thing for Mick Taylor.

Obviously in both cases it would primarily be about their work outside The Stones though.

Of the six surviving band members, only half of them have published autobiographies. And in Bill's case, it only really went up to 1969.

I know that the band has published 'official' books such as 'Stones on the Road' and 'According to the Rolling Stones' but there's still room there for more personalised accounts from Mick Jagger, Mick Taylor and Charlie Watts.

Hmmm, can't imagine Charlie writing ! However I could see him contributing to a book on jazz heroes.

Shame Mick J gave up on his autob in the 80s. With the right ghost writer or editor.......

Absolutely. It would be a great book to have an in depth look at their recording history. As revealed in that Beatles book, it would be fantastic to learn of some of the things the Stones went through to achieve what they have. The number of takes - and how many reels of tape - for a song; if it was edited down from several takes, which from what I've learned they never did but who knows; equipment and all that goes with that. Songs they finished that were left off and used later - or that were framed but not detailed and finished later. There is nothing but speculation, it seems, about that and whoever has the vague memory (Mick) of when certain songs were started and finished. It would be cool if someone could nail down those facts.

Any tricks they might have pulled, used or created.

Mixing and mastering. There's a lot that could be written about how the Stones recorded and the results they wound up with. A couple of books worth at least.

Of course, with what would be available since the Stones recorded all over the planet.

I'd a few ideas for such a book many years ago, but the amount of work - even then - that would have been needed to do it justice was really off the scale.

Its something that really would take years to do - and being a 'niche' market, it would be a major financial risk and far from a sure thing sales-wise.

I mentioned how comparatively straightforward such a book on the Beatles would be - and remember, Lewisohn's books studied the work of a band who only recorded for 7 or 8 years. There are similar books on Dylan as well - but again, like The Beatles, tracing most of Bob's sessions isnt THAT difficult as the information is 'out there' already and he recorded most of his albums in Columbia-owned studios in New York, Nashville or LA. Plus - quite incredibly - Bob Dylan's entire studio sessions for the first 20 years of his career (apart from the Basement Tapes, which is hard to document) consists of barely NINETY days in recording studios.

The Stones sometimes take longer than that to make entire albums.

I want to hear Mick's version of the truth, since he wasn't as wasted as Keith thru the years and probably has a much better memory of what really went on.

I want Mick to write a book of his poems, of lyrics not used or just poems he comes up with, etc. He said he's always writing. That would be interesting to me.

Or anything else to rerwrite..Or Invent
Keith's book "Life" is in complete contradiction to what he said in the Rolling Stones Monthlys, and other 60s magazine about songwriting, guitar playing,etc..Im much more inclined to believe the band about such things that were happening at the time..Not after 40 Years & a Couple Freight Cars of White Palace!

For Example: For 40 Years+ Keith Says That Brian Jones Formed the Stones. He gives Brian Credit for placing an ad in a newspaper called Jazz News. Ian Stewart Answered the ad placed by Brian Jones. All original members including Ian Stewart agree: hence the Stones began to take shape. Now all of a sudden Keith gives Ian Stewart Credit for starting the band..That Book Is Like Reading Realistic Fiction.

Jagger could step up, defend the dignity of Little Micky, and write his own autobiography. But he still won't.

It's too bad that Freddie Sessler never wrote a book about his time with the band. Now that would have been an interesting read! smoking smiley

I'm looking forward to Andy Babiuk's Stones' Gear book about their instruments. It's due later this year or early next year.

Pallenberg - if she told it straight, it would be interesting. Jagger, but I fear Mick will put such a spin on history that it will be largely pointless. If he dared to tell us the truth and not go down the Keith road of petty insults and macho posturing, then we would have us a right royal read.

Wasn't the problem even back in 1985 that Mick couldn't remember much?

There have been several of these career overview books which catalogue and review each album and their tracks. I usually find these interesting even if I don't always agree with the opinions given.
What is noticable is that the Stones solo work is seldom given much space and when mentioned is usually dismissed in a few short paragraphs. I'm sure this part of their career is important to the individual Stones (and ex-Stones).
In other words a good in-depth look at both the group 'and' their solo-work would be a worthy project.

Ania Pallenberg's point of view, which would be very skewed and unreliable, would nevertheless be fascinating to read. However, we will never see it, as she has been effectively muzzled by the ongoing financial support she derives from Keith.

I would be very willing to read accounts by Mick Taylor, Marshall Chess, and Bianca Jagger.
