Stones turn down Olympics Opening gig

according to today's Daily Telegraph, McCartney will open the Olympics in London in 2012. No Ringo (on tour in USA), no Zeppelin (Plant not interested)... and no Stones (no reason).

not playing next year, or also on tour?

Macca is in my opinion the best choice for that particular gig.No mucking about and ''I'll tell yer later''.He just gets on with it.He appeals to the masses all over the world. He gets my vote. >grinning smiley<

I would have liked that they had the Stones

What a real shame the Stones will be not playing at the Olympic Opening Gig.
The Olympic's represent energy, vitality and strengh! I certainly do not think Paul McCartney has any of these qualities these days! I can think of many other more suitable 'older' performers who could show how it should be done!
I suspect that' Money' doesn't come into it Macca!!! Well I suppose he is still paying off Heather Mills, enough said!!!

I have seen him a few years ago in Cologne and believe me, it was one of the most energetic concert I have ever been to. Super band ... not one single bum note that night. He is the perfect choice for the show!

Yet you dont see the irony in suggesting that a bunch of wizened musicians in their late 60s/early 70s DO have them ? As opposed to a thousand other acts?

Macca is the best choice. He has lots of positive vibes and is backed up by a tight band. I saw them in Las Vegas in June and they were excellent. Mick will always put on a great show, but you can never depend on Keith in recent years.

I am not saying he has never been enegetic in his perfomances in the past but as you said yourself it was a few years ago that you saw him and I think it shows!
cannot compare to the energy of our Mick!!! Personal taste I accept but I want The Stones!!!

They well may be a bunch of Oldies but they still have got it! Ronnie and the lads behaviour is part of what the Stones are, always been like it & always will.

I think you could not write that if you had ever seen him. I have seen him 7 years ago (that is some time, I know), but it was an almost 3 hour concert full of energy, vitality strength...and yea, great music. I have seen a lot of videos from the last 3 years and it looks like not much has changed.

Anyway, it is a great news that The Stones will not take part and I would like McCartney to do the same. Olympic games for me are about money, media, advertiment...a lot of other things and then maybe sports (I know a lot of people will disagree, but that is my opinion). The opening and closing ceremonies are just tastless circusses, where the country always needs to show off and overtake all those before. What for?

I am sure Macca will do a great job, but I think it is very "unnecessary.

It must be great to be a solo artist. No other opinions to squabble about.
Sting has made a boring professional life out of it!

Remember their early hit?

IT'S ALL OVER NOW!

Sorry, I do not want to be negative but that's what I think.

As long as we have Brussels 1973 and all those great official albums I won#t mind.

What could they possibly gain any more?

Just saw him last week at Yankee Stadium, and I agree with those who pick him to do it - great show, appeals to all, tight band = a perfect fit!! And he's very much a great 'face' for British music.....

I'm not having this nonsense.

Paul played Hyde Park 12 months ago, 3 hours set, brilliant, awesome, the best, the time of my life... just unbelievable.. I'm getting goosebumps typing this.

Paul will be fantastic.

As I see it the guy didn't die 2011 years ago, He was BORN 2011 years ago, but died 1981 years ago, but as you know that lasted just three days, and he is still arond, but ..

i would have thought McCartney would have made a better closing act.....I mean several Beatles songs lend themselves to the end of the road better than say....let's get this party started right...

and you typed that with a straight face, I take it.

Remind me how that 'behaviour' ties in with your 'The Olympic's represent energy, vitality and strength' comment again?

Allowing themselves to be a sideshow at a big corporate event thats got nothing whatsoever to do with rock n roll..hmm, on second thoughts, maybe they'd fit perfectly. If its good enough for Deutsche Bank, the NFL and Pepsi, then I suppose its good enough for the Olympics.
