What guitar did Keith use for the studio recording of HTW? Did he already have a 5 string Tele?

Keith has said it was probably a Tele but could've been a Les Paul Jr.

You can play 5 strings on a 6-string but not 6 on a 5.

As far as I know, the first telecaster that Keith owed is the famous Macawber, a gift from Gram Parsosns in the summer of 1971. He did not play a telecaster when the Sones played HTW in several TV Shows in 1969, nor did he at the Hyde Park Show and the US Tour 1969. So I think it is a Gibson.
Kewith once also said that he uses Telecasters on GYYO, which is not true also.
Some memories are really slipping away ;-)

But Brian had a Telecaster already in the early 60s, so he could have played one anytime without actually owning one.

HTW was most probably recorded with Keith's ES-330 through the HiWatt DR-103. The outtake of Loving Cup, HTW and the Hyde park gig all have the very same sound.

Keith has had a 64 Tele and the Sonic Blue 66 Tele way before Micawber. And Taylor had a 50's Taylor as well, which he used for the very first couple of Stones sessions (Jiving Sister Fanny etc).

His telecaster had 6 strings at the time, but it would have been in standard tuning
I guess, so that's only logical, I suppose.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

I strongly doubt it had 6 strings when he recorded HTW. However, the first time we actually see the 5-stringer is on the US 1969-tour, so...

Actually I meant at the time they did the shoot for the 2000 light years promo, in
which we can see the telecaster in a very close up.

Same version, same horns, but with different lead vocals as well as with the sailors in Paris-verse. No guitar solo yet, though smiling smiley

What 5-stringer, though, Dande dear? The LP? and/or the DA?
On the 1969 Sullivan performance Keith has a string dangling off his DA the whole time :E

I know we're talking open G but on which GUITAR did Keith have only 5 strings on the 69 tour?
I believe it was the LP but I'm asking to be sure.

Whatever that dangling string is on Ed Sullivan Keith sure seems to enjoy it :E

Thanks all - so probably not a Tele, right?

Asking for a friend who claims she knows someone who owns "the Fender prototype Tele especially built for Keith that he used on the recording of HTW". I highly doubted that story, and it looks like you guys confirmed my suspicion. smiling smiley

Dande dear, that first shot isn't pre-Hyde Park - it's from their pre-tour rehearsals in California.
Here's a look at his six strings at Hyde Park - the screencapture's from JJF:

Are you sure? I thought it was from the rehearsal space they rented for the Hyde Park gig, at the Apple Studio's. They never used HiWatt amps in the U.S.

This is the 1969 rehearsals:

Ha! So I was right after all! That's (The Hiwatt - being a proud owner of one myself) probably why I wrote it (even though I had second thoughts) smiling smiley

EDIT: Keith had his hair cut a bit before the US-tour as well..

This page of the San Francisco Art Exchange marks
the picture (by Michael Cooper) as being taken before the Hyde Park show too.

and apologies Dande, for miscorrecting your post 8\
