Billy Idol was one of the artists originally asked to sing "Don't You Forget About Me". He eventually covered it on a greatest hits CD. When I think of 80's music, Simple Minds version of that song immediately comes to mind! It defines the 80's for me! Great piece, hbwriter!

It's funny about the band's reluctance regarding "Don't You Forget About Me." It reminds me of a comment I recently read by Bette Midler who said she'd busted her butt recording some album that didn't sell that well. And shortly after she recorded AS A QUICK, HALF-ASSED AFTERTHOUGHT the song "Wind Beneath My Wings" for the movie Beaches, and THAT'S the song that became a huge hit.

I did not realize they were from Scotland. I liked some of their music at the time. I can't ever remember hearing Jim Kerr talk. Wasn't he married to Hynde from the Pretenders?

By the way...some other contenders for best Scottish band:

Big Country
Average White Band
Franz Ferdinand
Del Amitri
Primal Scream

all listed on a site: [scotlandinter.net]

Seems like the Celtic bretheren from across the pond have some bigger name acts than the Scots.

Yay, the latest has-been article from HB.

And that's a stellar line-up of 70/80's leftovers you have coming up. I especially can't wait to hear more about David Byrne's crappy world music, or another round of what happened to Frampton's career.

Riveting journalism.
