80s stones were awesome
Posted by: jackflash1129 ()

I think alot of people would agree that the sixties and seventies were the stones classic era. Everything after thus pales in comparison.I think this is unfair, as I think the stones are still killing it to this day. But just for example I made a best of list for a friend, of the 1980s stones songs to check out:
1. Dance
2. Shes so cold
3. Emotional rescue
4. All about you
5. Start me up
6. Hang fire
7. Slave
8. Little t&a
9. Worried about you
10. Tops
11. No use in crying
12. Waiting on a friend
13. Undercover of the night
14. She was hot
15. Too much blood
16. One hit to the body
17. Fight
18. Sad sad sad
19. Mixed emotions
20. Rock and a hard place
21. Almost hear you sigh
22. Slipping away

While I wouldnt compare 80s stones to 60s or 70s stones, I think this best of list would compare well to almost any 80s acts best of list. Thoughts?

You're right. And they are excellent regardless of what decade they're from. It's easy to point out that they cruised from pre-recorded material for some of the first and all of the second of the first two LPs of the 80s. Strangely enough when I think of 80s Stones I think of UNDERCOVER, DIRTY WORK and STEEL WHEELS.

Interesting list; I would remove:

    [*] 'Emotional Rescue'
    [*] 'Hang Fire'
    [*] 'Worried About You'
    [*] 'She Was Hot'
    [*] 'Sad, Sad, Sad'
[*] 'Rock and a Hard Place'

And add:

    [*] 'Down in the Hole'
    [*] 'Neighbours'
[*] 'Tie You Up (The Pain of Love)'
    [*] 'Harlem Shuffle'
    [*] 'Dirty Work'
[*] 'Hold on to Your Hat'
    [*] 'Continental Drift'

.....

That's a bit strong, mediocre stuff or crap. You make it sound like nothing from the 1980s is worthwhile. There are some crap tunes listed: Fight is one of the better tunes on DIRTY WORK but there's nothing on DW I would include on a best of except Harlem Shuffle. One Hit is ball-less and tepid. Rock And A Hard Place absolutely blows. I'd remove the DW tracks and add Tie Me Up and All The Way Down from UNDERCOVER. And replace Dance with Summer Romance and add Neighbours to replace the missing number of RAAHP.

The 80s with all these keyboards and strange sounding drums were a tough decade for a rock and roll band. But the Stones did quite well during this period, imo.

So this would be my list:

Let Me Go
Down In The Hole
She´s So Cold
All About You
Start Me Up
Slave
Black Limousine
Tops
Undercover
She Was Hot
Feel On Baby
One Hit
Harlem Shuffle
Winning Ugly
Dirty Work
Mixed Emotions
Hold On To Your Hat
Break The Spell

I thought you meant as a live act. There was indeed a lot of crap in the middle part of the decade, with only a stand out track or two on Undercover and Dirty Work. As a live act Keith had finally shed the heroin years and seemed intent on reclaiming his reputation, while Bill & Charlie simply were the best rhythm section the Stones would ever have.

I disagree about one hit to the body. That was and is a fantastic track!I guess its one of those things- one mans trash is anothers treasure.

Totally serious. 60s and 70s stones were awesome, 80s stones dont compare. This is a list of what I consider the highlights and obviously that is subjective. My point is that despite the downward step in this decade, these songs are still better than most other 80s acts.

80s was the worst decade in popular music history. I think the stones in hindsight did pretty well.

The 80s were a hard time for 60s acts going through the mid life crisis of no longer being young hip and cool but not yet secure in legend status.

Really? Queen, The Clash, Blondie, Michael Jackson, Springsteen, Prince, the Police, Hall and Oates, Cyndy Lauper, and a whole barrel full of one hit wonders. At least the first half of the 80s was fantastic.

Well, Tattoo You and the Still Life tour were great. But Tatto You was really a seventies spillover product. And Still Life was a celebration of the sixties and seventies.
The rest of the eighties was pretty vacant (one so-so album and one stinker) until the start of the Steel Wheels Tour in late 1989.

Emotional Rescue and Undercover are among my very favorite albums. I listen to them both, to this day, loudly and happily. I think these two LPs are hugely underrated by most.

The 80's is also underrated as a decade of music. Yes, there was some terrible radio pop and synth pop, but then there was a lot of great stuff that came out of the 80's as well.. Talking Heads 80's albums and David Byrne's first solo album were pretty great, Paul Simon put out a couple monumental albums, U2 put out groundbreaking stuff, The Sugarcubes brought one of my favorite artists (Bjork) into the spotlight, Laurie Anderson (another one of my favorite artists) produced a large body of work during that time, Lou Reed's New York album, Keith's Talk Is Cheap album, the list of great artistic achievements from the 80's goes on and on. Just look beyond the hair metal and the synth pop that was so horrendous, and you'll see that it wasn't a bad decade for music, just incredibly diverse and experimental. As a rule, some experiments fail.
