Why don't they play iorr like they did on love you live ?
Posted by: keefriffhards ()

I was listening to this today and i forgot how lively and rockin this version is of iorr
The piano and the build up to the end its just off the chart, Keith's back up vocals and Chuck Berry licks, Micks passioned vocal attack, i just remembered how much i like this song today
Boy would i love them to play it like that again live
My question is why does it sound so uninspiring these days. What's missing

The SNL version with Mick and Foo Fighters is the best one since 1997 or so.
Sadly they play the same versions of the same songs over and over again, no change on the arrangments, no medley of 2 or 3 warhorses, it's always the same 6-8 minutes versions of the same songs.

There was one good version out there from last year i think
Some guy recorded several good live versions of songs with Keith's guitar high in the mix
Cant find it on u tube
Think he might of been called Rocks Off or something

I really like the version on Hyde Park Live.

The song needs less keyboard and more acoustic guitar. Today's version is the "big" Vegas version.

"whats missing? 40 years of testosterone"

Yep. You would think the Stones would know there's meds to correct this problem. Maybe someone should dose their hot milk with a hit of Cialis.

WHY TF can't they play it more like the studio version. The live versions always sound like a Chuck Berry song to me.

The Stones live and in the studio are completely different animals, or at least they were. There are many songs they have not been able to capture the musical magic they did in the studio, imo.

I agree this is one of the tunes they have never captured like the original recording, which had a funky roll to it they have never reproduced live. It was more like a T-Rex song than a Chuck Berry song.

The Foo Fighters version kicked ass.

In this case the live versions are too fast I think.
The studio version got a special vibe and groove they don't catch live although there a live versions I like.

The modern version is one of the war horses that I still enjoy live.
I'll take it live over "Tumbling Dice" or "Miss You" any day.

Someone must know

Because they play it like shit!

I recall reading somewhere that Keith alluded to the change of key because it was "better" and it's really more to do with making it a Stones song, which it isn't on IORR.

If you ask me,the '89 - '99 versions of "IORR" are the weakest.

It improved from there on the "Licks Tour" but the best were the 2005 tour encore closers.

As I said though in a thread a few months back,it would be nice,at this point,if they tried "IORR" in a studio - style live arrangement and played "Sympathy for the Devil" in an arrangement based more on the '69 / '70 live versions .... instead permorming it so heavily based on the studio version with the pre-programmed beat. Switch the 2 arrangements up or drop them out altogether.

Someone must know

Because they get old? Because a 70+-year old cannot sing anymore like he could in his mid-30's?

Recently I listeend to Mindnight rambler from Saitama 2006 which some people regard as the best Version of the song. Come on, it can't be compared to some good Version of the easrly '70s not because of the guitar playiing but because Mr Jagger due to his age is no more in that easy command of his voice as he was some decades ago. He sings more forced now than he did in his youth. That's normal because the voice loses some range when you get older.

No Insult here, just things that affect us all. Or in the words of the Rolling Stones: What a drag it is to get older...

You're right though Jagger's range seems still to be good, as per Emotional Rescue on recent tours, but he doesn't dare sing with the attack and abandon of yesteryear. The yelps on this version of IORR at the beginning of this thread are a good example of what is no more. Now we get Lisa yelping but it's no substitute. Indeed, no insult here - we all know Mick's voice is a much more fragile instrument these days and he has to prioritise getting through the tour. He has compensated to some degree by trying to actually sing better which can work well on ballads but the raunch and swagger of the past is much missed.

The funny thing is that the LYL version is different than the other versions on that tour. Different key, and more guitar-heavy + vocal overdubs.

In 75/76 the switched between playing it in B and in G. I can't see the reason why because B obviously works so much better. LYL is the best version of this song IMHO.

Only twice, right?

I'm not sure. Toronto and LA is B, can't remember about other dates. I know that Paris is G and a few other European shows as well. Maybe it was played in G during the whole European leg. Perhaps someone here might know the answer?

I checked Detroit and Kansas city and it's also in B. So I guess it was B in America and changed to G for Europe. ?

They are people, musicians, artists. They evolve. It's like asking "Why didn't van Gogh paint a thousand of the same sunflower paintings?"
