Question about "Live at The Marquee Club:1971"
Posted by: TornAndFried ()

I just saw the track listing for the soon-to-be-released DVD of the famous 1971 Marquee Club show and noticed Jumping Jack Flash is not included. Was it played at the Marquee show(s) as it was on every other stop on the 1971 UK tour? If so, does a recording or film exist?

I just saw the track listing for the soon-to-be-released DVD of the famous 1971 Marquee Club show and was disappointed the two opening numbers - Jumping Jack Flash and Carol - are still not included. I was hoping somehow a tape or film of these two songs would be discovered in the BBC archives for this release, but it's not to be. What's the story of what happened with them? Were they filmed along with the rest of the show and the tape or film later lost?

Were those songs played at all?

JJF was played on all the other shows on the 1971 UK tour so it would seem appropriate to open the Marquee show with it. Live With Me would be an odd choice for a show opener.

By all indications they were both played at the Marquee Club, like every stop on the 1971 UK Tour. Live With Me would be an odd choice for a show opener.

It's not a real show. It was just an invite for a tv performance. They did several takes on different songs. So, no, it's not a regular set for the 1971 tour.

I have missed those indications of JJF and Carol being played that night, though.

It could be you're thinking of the Leeds release and the inclusion of JJF and Carol?

I could be wrong, but since they opened all the other shows on the 1971 UK tour with JJF and Carol it would seem fitting they would do the same at the Marquee. But as it was always intended to be filmed for television perhaps they did a shorter set with different songs.

But I still would like to know for shure . .

They opened with JJF and Live With Me. But as I said this was not a real show.

On the bootleg it sounds like they open with Live With Me, as The Stones are introduced over the beginning of the song. Or is that just an edit, the announcer was added over the top of the song later? I would be disappointed if that were the case, as I've always loved that as an opener like that. The piano starts, then the drums come in, "Ladies and gentlemen, The Rolling Stones", Bill's bass comes in, and so on. Works great I think.

Carol was not played after 1969.

Carol was not played after 1969.

They played Roll Over Beethoven instead in 1970.

According to Nico Zentgraf the setlist of the Marquee show was:

01. Live With Me
02. Dead Flowers
03. I Got The Blues 1
04. I Got The Blues 2
05. Let It Rock
06. Midnight Rambler
07. Satisfaction
08. Bitch 1
09. Brown Sugar
10. Bitch 2

An addition to previous post:
The recording is from the dress rehearsal. Audience sounds were mixed in later.
